  • your #4a is the way to go. dialog should be mono. I know there’s a seductive lure for the added depth of (even moderate) stereo dialog. I’ve experimented with this, but the fact is non-mono dialog is generally a big no-no, unless you’re specifically generating multi-channel dialog for effects purposes. If you really miss the depth the second track of dialog, use a bit of scene-appropriate ambient or room reverb.

Right. Instead, do what many video guys do: spend all your money on video & NONE or too little on audio, because, you know, audio isn’t really all that, and anyway you can always get WAY down the road, realize you have crap audio, panic & spend tons getting it fixed. I know. I fix an awful lot of it. Strike a balance. Buy modest but good gear that won’t need to be replaced in a year or when a bigger budget job comes in. And congratulations for at least talking to audio guys about your needs in advance, if that’s indeed what you’re doing.

how about going the other way, from Avid to FCP? Same 3600 list?

Motion runs fine on that machine. It’s the machine I’m currently running. Your problem has to do with an old problem that you’ll have to search the forums for that cause Motion to Quit. There’s a similar issue with Compressor.

Years ago the SD version of the Doremi units used MJPEG as I recall. I don’t think they’re doing proprietary formats, should be something widely accessible. Call them.

Also, without external common genlock to each camera, expect a bit of drift between cameras during long takes.

Consider using Seagate NS series drives, especially if you’re raiding them together. Longer warranty and apparently more quality control in manufacturing than the AS series. Also about $100 more per drive. I couldn’t find the 1TB NS on NewEgg’s site but they’re around.

If you’re doing the 5 bay Seritek, why not go RAID 5? RAID 0. Almost as fast and as RAID 0 & safer to boot. With 2 sets of these I think you can get into RAID 50. I’m not sure if any of the Seritek cards can handle this, but there are cards out there that can. I haven’t dived into RAID 50 yet, but with all the drives you plan to bring online it seems like it may be a good way to go.

Talent. Good one. LOL. I think there’s always a case to be made for total dialog down, atmospheric music up, silence-is-deafening type of sound editorial as a cure for bad acting. Tell everyone it was an artistic decision & that you’re really happy with the way it turned out. Or recast the part in post as someone who speaks a foreign language, dub that language in, cut in side & back-of-head shots only, then add English subtitles. Voila! Bad acting is a thing of the past!
