I appreciate it Russ…but sadly I feel that work around wouldnt be to good for Productivity for me. Reason is I burn DVDs and send them to clients to approve them. If not approved I revise. Plus, when a Client comes to my office I revised it for him/her here as well. And compressing it that way, might take too long. Thats why I use the SD sequence work around.

Randomly…well somewhat… I have had the same system for some time as well. We have a Project shot the same way that captures and logs real well. Then we have a project that has those problems. And still does..But what I described to you has been the best answer to our issue. We even changed out Cameras / Decks / and a video Card to see if those were the problem … MMM,,, NOPE. Then we even Cleaned the Heads … YEAH no luck there. So, the check list I gave you again, is the best way to go. I even gave that to the sony guys (because they are alot better at service than Apple) so to help those people with same problems.

This is a long post…But I ran through reading this with you guys…
Just wondering… Did you try exporting off of the timeline? then straight to DVD SP?
No One said anything about it…so I was just asking
Well, thats my workflow and its worked great.-Raymond-

OMG!! I thought I was the only ONE!!!
I sympathize with you Man. Anyways, For the past week I have had the same problem. Here is What I found. (Oh and this is with calling SONY, APPLE, AJA, AND B&H) you know what NONE OF THEM HAD AN ANSWER…
But … It sort of works for me now.
1st) make sure that you throw away your prefs for FCP before opening the project.
2nd) Also make sure you restart the computer (YES RESTART THE ALL POWERFUL MAC)
3rd) Make sure you set the AV setting to HDV (Not HDV APPLE) and that you have the timeline to HDV set and the Capture Control to HDV firewire.
4th) Next when you go into Log and Capture, in the second tab, there is a box with a check box that says something like “Locate Start and Stop Rec” – TURN THAT STUPID BOX OFF (I found that to be the biggest colprit ( I beleive I spelled that wrong)
Anyways That should do you.I think this is a glitch with FCP not working as well with HDV as it should. I said it somewhere else on here. but I am hoping the new FCP will play better with HD.
Good luck,

Hey guys thanks for responding so quickly…
Answer to your questions. Well, I have the latest OSX … til Leopard decides to come out.
And I do indeed have an AJA LHE card that inputs HD-SDI.It took me awhile to find a work around through FCP to make a HD project play on a Standard DVD Player. Well, here is my work around. (By the way, I cannot take all the credit…I have ran into a lot of people and put different ideas off of theirs to get here)
1) Anyways, I Log and Capture all of my HD footage…
2) then Create an HD timeline with the same setting as the HD Capture Log.
3) once I create my timeline, do some editing, I am ready to send to DVD.
4) I create another Sequence in SD NTSC mode.
5) Drag my HD Sequence (Nested) to the NTSC timeline.
6) I make sure the Filter (Flicker and Shift Fields (-1) are on)
7) I also make sure that motion playback is set to Best instead of Linear in the Sequence Settings.
8) then from there I am able to create the DVD normally. Now Update… I fix the Crappy transitions with some tweaks of the Flicker Filter and Shifting the Field from +1 to -1.
But I still run into Program Crashing. Oh and every once in awhile I get this funky sound instead of my audio when I play back the timeline. (Only happens here and there / Closing and reopening fixes that … but again a Headache)
Oh and I have thrown away my prefs…tons of times throughout this trial.
I am coming to the conclusion that this is a glitch in 5.0 FCP and that the new FCP will fix this issue. Thanks again,

Apple+R by the way is for Preview purposes…enough rendering just to preview an effect or a few clips before exporting…takes time to Render all funcion. Plus you can change the render settings of Apple+R. What Jerry was talking about works great.
The only thing that was going through my mind when reading this was whether your sequence was set to NTSC or PAL – HD. Because I noticed you said you were working in 1080 PAL (50i).
I would check that. Because I’ve noticed my FCP defaults to the settings of my last project. And I work alot between PAL and NTSC; Both in HD and in SD formats.-Raymond-

I find 3 GB on a MacBook Pro … and 4 GB on the MacPro are great for editing. Not as much rendering when trying to just preview a few clips with effects. But thats my opinion. Also look into some raids.

I appreciate that. I will try that route out. The office that I work at has all of these things. I do have a Raid with 2 TB of space so…that shouldn’t bother me. Thanks for your input.

That idea sounds good. But I was under the impression that you would lose some info going through an AJA box via Component. I have an AJA Kona LHE Capture Card and setup with a Quad 2.5 G5 PowerMac.
To get true HD, the Sony M15U deck needs to output through FireWire. It states this in the manual and Sony even told me that. Correct me if my facts are wrong. Thanks. Still getting errors during capture after every 15 clips.
… on the Positive side, The video looks amazing when it finally comes through.-Raymond-

If I am not mistaken, Media Manager in FCP should recapture your logs from one format to another (like 29.97 DV to 23.98 DVC PROHD) once you get your new card working. I am able to do that with FCP 5.0.4 on my Kona System.
