I am encountering a very bizarre error in Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. WWhen I attempt to batch capture HDV footage I am often encountering an error that reads “Unable to locate timecode”. FCP will control the deck aand come close to the timecode, but will simply move back and forth a second or so before the TC. I have tried different decks, projects, tapes, and cables. I have created new projects, and used old projects. FCP has no problem with DV footage, only HDV. Every so often if I change the Easy Setup options between HDV a60i and HDV 601 basic, it will work with the basic setting. But iinconsistently. If anyone has encountered this problem or has any suggestions I am all ears. Thank you for your help ahead of time.

OMG!! I thought I was the only ONE!!!

I sympathize with you Man. Anyways, For the past week I have had the same problem. Here is What I found. (Oh and this is with calling SONY, APPLE, AJA, AND B&H) you know what NONE OF THEM HAD AN ANSWER…

But … It sort of works for me now.

1st) make sure that you throw away your prefs for FCP before opening the project.
2nd) Also make sure you restart the computer (YES RESTART THE ALL POWERFUL MAC)
3rd) Make sure you set the AV setting to HDV (Not HDV APPLE) and that you have the timeline to HDV set and the Capture Control to HDV firewire.
4th) Next when you go into Log and Capture, in the second tab, there is a box with a check box that says something like “Locate Start and Stop Rec” – TURN THAT STUPID BOX OFF (I found that to be the biggest colprit ( I beleive I spelled that wrong)
    Anyways That should do you.

I think this is a glitch with FCP not working as well with HDV as it should. I said it somewhere else on here. but I am hoping the new FCP will play better with HD.

    Good luck,
    Raymond

Thanks for the help, I’ll have to do some testing to see if that resolves the problem. Did this issue occur randomly for you? I cannot link any event or change to the causation of this problem?? This has been our system/setup for some time.

Randomly…well somewhat… I have had the same system for some time as well. We have a Project shot the same way that captures and logs real well. Then we have a project that has those problems. And still does..But what I described to you has been the best answer to our issue. We even changed out Cameras / Decks / and a video Card to see if those were the problem … MMM,,, NOPE. Then we even Cleaned the Heads … YEAH no luck there. So, the check list I gave you again, is the best way to go. I even gave that to the sony guys (because they are alot better at service than Apple) so to help those people with same problems.

bdstric- HDV timecode has a history of being unstable. Here is what works best for us.

    1. Each clip must have at least 5 seconds of pre-roll/post-roll. If not capture it as you go.

    2. disconnect all other firewire devices. If you are digitizing to an external firewire drive install a seperate firewire bus (inexpensive PCI card).

    3. We use the DVCProHD firewire machine control for our M10U deck. You must select this from the Log and Capture window.

    Hope this helps.

I run FCP 5.1 on a Quad 2.5 G5 with a Kona LHE and Sony M15U HDV deck…. Still pops up huh? … hmmm… have you checked the tape to make sure there are no timecode breaks on the tape? I actually found that on some of my HDV Tapes. And yes I agree with Jerry…HDV is very unstable.

Upon further inspection, the root of the problem is coming from the 5.1.4 upgrade. When I revert back to 5.1, there are no prpoblems. However, once I upgrade, the problem comes back. AApple is researching the issue, but have not come back with any solutions. Is anyone else having trouble with 5.1.4? Thanks

i’ve just tried ALL these suggestions with FCP 6.0.1 and STILL the problem persists. i’m trying to recapture some HDV clips via batch capture. i’ve tried unchecking “use original clip settings” and no dice. i’m heading to the HDV forum to see what answers they might bestow…

thanks for helping out a bonehead!
