Try this to fix your crashing element 3D:
Open up a previous AE project, make a new comp, add a solid layer, then apply element 3d, and see if it still crashes. Mine has quit crashing when I do this.
It seems to only crash on a BRAND NEW project.
good luck

SOLUTION FOUND!!!
It was my computer memory. I had one stick of RAM that was different from the original memory with the machine. Apparently the inconsistencies of latency or otherwise glitched outputs.
Pulled the offending stick of ram and now outputs are PERFECT.
thanks

Jay:
The first problem that needs to be resolved is the bug in CS6 (acknowledged by Adobe) when working with long format, spanned MTS clips. CS5 and 5.5 handled these quite well, but CS6 stutters, and then freezes when you try to playback these spanned clips.
Once that is resolved, the best would be to use the AVCHD presets built into PPRo, and then use media encoder to export.Eternity…don’t miss it for the world.

This is a known bug with Adobe. They are working on it. It primarily happens with spanned MTS clips (where the camera splits the longer recorded file into 4GB or less files). CS5 and 5.5 handled these just fine, it was the CS6 release that has caused this problem.

Chris:
The problem is that Adobe CS5 and CS5.5 worked PERFECTLY with .MTS spanned files (where it starts new .MTS files every 4GB of data) but with the release of CS6 it cannot handle the spanned clips.
If you have short, non-spanned MTS then CS6 works fine, but for wedding/event videographers, this is a real issue.Eternity…don’t miss it for the world.

This is a KNOWN bug to Adobe. PLEASE, everyone with this issue go to:
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
(This is Adobe’s bug report page)
and send Adobe something like “Long/spanned MTS (AVCHD) files cause hanging/freezing”
also, most are also complaining about “Audio RE-conforming” each time one of these projects opens, maybe send that as well.

Has anyone figured this out yet…it seems to only happen to me with large projects.
Any solutions? Very frustrating.

If anyone has an educational/academic version, then the 3rd party plugins will not show up until you register and get a valid serial number. (Except for Keylight—it should be there regardless)

They are included in the Academic versions but will not show up until you receive your official Serial number from Adobe, and then they will “turn on”. Just had to do this myself recently.

Thanks for the advice, now I am wondering, after doing a little research about the new multicore AMDs, about dual Xeon vs dual AMD (opterons). They have 6 and 12 core processors.
I just don’t know anyone locally with a dual AMD machine doing VFX work.
