It is completely dictated by the original face object and the size of the cubes you fill it in with.
You get 1 clone for every point/poly/or edge the face has. More polys the smaller the gaps between clones./Randy

Take a model of a face. Turn off the visablity.
Take a cloner object. Set type to Object. Drag the face model into the “object” link.
Place a shape as a child of the cloner object.I think there is one in the Mograph folder of the content browser.

Motion clip should do it.
Or for a circle you could make a helix spline with a height of zero.

Give each spline its own extrude nurbs and apply the textures to the extrude nurbs.
Or make it editable and create selections.

Its not my tutorial to give away.
I am not sure how he rigged up the one in the tutorial but here is an example I made. Its a little rough but it should get you started.

To adjust the aim and targets just change the constant number in the xpersso. That number corisponds to the Point number in the spline. (To see what number you want Select a point on the spline then look for the highlighted number in the structure menu (Tabbed with the object manager in the top right corner not the dropdown menu)/Randy

You could get a nice result with spline dynamics.
