I’ve been allways exporting from the time-line (time consuming) and only recently i started to export refference movies, but after that I can see in the link I think I will keep exporting from the time-line again. let see if anybody knows something about this issue.

Sorry Nick, you are right. When you trim a clip in the brownser window and export its keep the original TC. I was thinking about exporting something from the time-line.

Hi Zach,
Normally the User-bits are generated when you record with a camera or Video-desk. Users bits are embed in the TC (Longitudinal TC or Vertical Interval TC). When you capture your footage with FC the Uers-bits are captured but, as long as I know, FC doesn’t give you any chance to use that information, not even to monitor that data. And when you export from FC a new TC is generated but you can not even set User-bits in it.
About TC the only chance that FC gives you is to set the initial time.

If the setting of your time-line is exactly the same that your footage, unless you check the “recompress all frames”, when exporting, only the clips that you apply a filter or chage any parametter in the motion tab are recompressed.
About the TC: when you export a clip in FC a new TC is generated. If you want that your new clip start with a certain TC, you can set it in the prefferences.

If you had get such a long time to compress 30 minutes is because (probably) you set the ‘frame contol’ in CUSTOM and with the most demanding set-ups. If you make SD NTSC from standart SD NTSC movies, you should let that “off” becouse you don’t go to resize, nor change the frame-rate, not to de-interlace. When I make Two-pass VBR normally it takes a bit more than the double of the film duration to compress. Of course if you export from the FC time-line all the stuff will be re-rendered (even if has been already rendered) and can take ages. I used to export from the ti-line but now I export a refference moovie (when all the clips has been rendered in FC). Is faster and the result is the same.

There is a good one from the Apple Pro Training Series: ADVANCED COLOR CORRECTION AND EFFECTS IN FCP 5. Its start from the basic primary CC to the more complicated techniques for scenes color matching etc.

Steve I think (as reel2reel says) that you better do it with Compressor, where you have much more control on the process. This doesn’t mean that you gonna get some thing perfect with Compressor. I’m about to have a try to BitVicer that many people had recommend me in this forum.

As Tom says when you install DVDSTP the MPG2 player should be installed. The MPG2 componnet doesn’t come with FC, neider with QT Pro. Any way you can buy it from the Apple web site for 19.9 US$.

I would recommend you set (for rendering) your time-line in 8b Unc rather than in Animation. like that you keep in the YCbCr world, the same used in MPG2. You can have a look too to Sheer codec. Top quality, and smaller files than any other codec.
