Could be your preview setting is stretching resources a bit, then second run through things get buffered. Try reducing to Good and see if it makes a difference.

Depends on the footage. If, for instance it’s a talking head with a still background, dual pass will make little difference. If, on the other hand, there are some fast moving or complex sequences mixed with some less moving sequences, the dual pass will allocate more resources where they are most needed, and you will end up with better quality overall for the same average bitrate.

If you’re going to DVD try a DVDA preset, either NTSC or PAL according to your needs.

If you want to simply see the timecode in the event thumbnail in the Timeline, rather than on the Preview screen, turn on View > Active Take Information, or Ctrl Shift I.
I always have this on, it’s very handy – you can even see the In or Out frame T/C change as you drag the edge of an event.

No, my cookies are unchanged and have been there throughout – under Opera Tools/Advanced/Cookies, there are 9 separate entries listed under Creative Cow, but the Red Name thing, which used to work, does not return if I close the browser and re-open. I have to manually reset my account. Not a huge deal – just an annoyance.

Rob,
I don’t knowingly delete cookies, yet I have to tell the Cow who I am each new opening of the browser – once a day usually.
The strange thing is that the Cow remembers which posts I’ve already read, and it knows my time zone, so it does sort of know who I am, but no red name till I reset cookies.

There’s also a preference to render Menus as progressive (last item of General tab) which may help.

I’ve also had this problem for a month or more – I have to either make a post and input my name and email or reset cookies at the site Edward posted before my name turns red.
If I close down the browser (Opera) and reopen, the same problem returns and I have to manually correct it. Other sites such as Sony’s still recognise me automatically.

Apart from effects applied which you mentioned, rendering depends on processor speed.
On my “ancient” machine (Dual AMD 2000) I would expect the sort of render you describe to take an hour or less.
