i am rendering a finished dv project in vegas 6.0c.

i am rendering it in MPEG-2 — “DVD Architect video stream”. i just wanted to know what is the difference between single pass and two pass MPEG besides the fact that rendering time is doubled?

does it improve picture quality all?

It’s a more thorough analysis of how the compression is to be applied.

I have not found it to make much of a difference (if any). However, results can vary quite a bit depending on the media you are working from. My suggestion is to render out five minutes worth of your program with and without 2-pass and see if you can tell a difference.

Depends on the footage. If, for instance it’s a talking head with a still background, dual pass will make little difference. If, on the other hand, there are some fast moving or complex sequences mixed with some less moving sequences, the dual pass will allocate more resources where they are most needed, and you will end up with better quality overall for the same average bitrate.
