Peter – yes it’s repeatable. I bet it’s just a bunch of keystrokes to get out of it, but failing that I am stuck.

In Red Engine 4.3.latest select Digital Cinema Desktop in preferences, then engage external monitor. Red takes over the laptop screen and cannot be dismissed.

This was even worse when I was in FCP in my timeline and FCP was already using the Digital Cinema Desktop preview, thus blanking my external monitor.

Only way out was to power cycle and trash Red Prefs.

Again, it’s prbly just keystrokes to dismiss the full screen but I don’t see it next to “Preview to External Monitor”

This Mac Pro was a warrantee replacement. When it arrived I removed the 10.6.x system drive and replaced it with my 10.5.8 system drive from the old Mac Pro.

Can I simply swap the drives back, install apps, and be good to go?

Yessir, I am a disciple of Larry Jordan so I have had that routine down long ago.

Ran FCP Maintenance Tool as you suggested. It hasn’t found anything funny, but did display crash reports that say FCP overloaded probably from too many layers at the play head or too many filters in them. Not sure what to do from there – I do stack ’em deep and also rely on Boris Red in the timeline, which I expect to slow things down until rendered.

But pretty much if I hit the space bar even before straight cuts, it’s possible – nay probable – I will get the “spinning beach ball of death” then audio then finally video and the whole process takes some time. However the play head may not actually move…and yes I used unlimited in dymanic modes.

2 theories:

1. I am indeed doing too much in the timeline
2. My 4th Mac Raid Card is starting to wet the bed…
3. Something to do with the grfx card? Radeon 4870HD
