Sorry to say that didn’t work. i spent an hour rendering a 2 minute section. all the jitters and interlacing issues are still there. Guess I have to recapture?

No need to be sorry it was my mistake. So what would be the easiet way to fix this? Do I have to recapture completely?

indeed you seem to be correct. I checked on another system here that a clean install of 5.1 was done. The field dominace is set to upper for uncompressed. The other system was upgraded and the preset is wrong.
Great looks like that tiny little oversight may have cost me 2 days. Normally it wouldn’t be a problem but any change I make to the sequence now requires the Magic Bullet to render again.

he presets were set to lower. Is this one of those cases where FCP’s defaults are completely wrong?

slight amendment. I went back and looked frame by frame at the sequence. It seems like in some places there is a slight flicker like the fields aren’t matching up perfectly. Its barely noticable at all on the playback but maybe it’s getting made worse during the MPEG rendering process. I jsut spent like 2 days rendering these effects. I’m in alot of trouble if I’ve got to re-render this sequence. Any ideas?

I guess it’s just not getting a real update like the others(seeings as it’s on version 2.1 already).
A pity really. I kind of wish they’d integrate a decent titling tool into FCP inself. Avid’s titling capabilities are much stronger and don’t require jumping to another app, exporting quicktime files and dumping them into your project. The workflow for titling with Livetype always seemed a bit clunky to me.

I do kind of understand the frustration with diferentent apps to accomplish anything. truth of the matter is FCP is the one apps that was really designed from the ground up by Apple. the others are the result of other software companies Apple purchased. I wish Apple would have put more forethought into intergrating the programs and giving them a more standaized interface. Some things really bug me. Liek sincethey introduced LiveType they haven’t made any improvements to the text tool in FCP and I doubt they ever will. So if you want titles that don’t look terrible you have to learn another program.

Compression isn’t jsut the chroma subsampling. Uncompressed footage will also give you a higher datarate and thus better quality. That being said capturing uncompressed isn’t going to eliminate any compression that was there to start with. DV footage, for example, is already highly compressed on the tape itself. The DV codec in FCP is designed to match that compression method thus really nothing is lost loading DV footage in as DV. Likewise you really aren’t going to gain anything loading DV in uncompressed since there isn’t enough information on the original tape to provide that quality anyway. There may be other reasons to bring it in using the Uncompressed codec like mixing DV with other tape formats and titling. I’m not sure but I think effects might look a bit better on an uncompressed timeline too.
For your film project it really depends on the format you are getting telecined too. If you go to a higher quality format like Digibeta loading in uncompressed might be worthwhile.

Wanted to thank everyone for thier suggestions. I ended up downgrading my FCP to 5.1. Of course the HDV came in with zero trouble making me feel foolish for taking so much time troubleshooting.
Just a friendly warning to anyone who uses HDV regularly about being careful with updating to 5.14.
