I’ll give it a go. I can’t use the FCP internal scaling very effectively. Just ramping to a smooth stop on an image pan and zoom is not great even with the bezier keyframes.

I’ve just switched from Premiere / Windows after several years of doing high-end commercials and corporates, and I am enjoying the transition, particularly the stability. But don’t flame me here but Finals Cut’s text generator and still-image scale and motion manipulation are woeful compared to Premiere. I just couldn’t believe the text generator when I first used it. What have the designers been thinking the past five years?
The Premiere text designers came from Inscriber and is really is workable and powerful in real life editing. Same goes for quickly doing fast still montages with movement ala Ken Burns style.
Sigh…anyway back to Final Cut. When I’m better at FCP, I’ll post what I love about it…

I had (still have for legacy projects) a dual 5420 on a Intel Skulltrail 5400XS mobo, GTX280, 8gb RAM, 4tb RAID-0, etc, etc with a Blackmagic HD Extreme. I feel the interaction between CS4 and the Decklink card has been a major issue. I know Matt and the guys at BMD have been working for a year on a stable platform for CS4 and I would have to say it’s been in the radical re-write and re-coding of CS4 by Adobe that has caused issues.
Funny enough I had to switch to PPro last night to cut an intro for a doco that I’ve cut on FCP, because the image scaling process and title generator in Final Cut Pro 7 is just horrible to use. CS4 kills it for speed and ease. But there’s also much to like about FCP. I’ve already forgotten my Premiere shortcuts in less than a week 🙁

But still, the Kona 4 question is valid. The next gen Kona may have other features beside increased rez like more RT effects, accelerated rendering, etc.
I just got my Kona LHe today to replace the Blackmagic HD Extreme. The Extreme has been good in the Mac, but no CS4 drivers still. 🙁

If I could add my two cents worth, I think CS4 is the most unstable, crash-ridden NLE app I have ever used. I switched from discreet edit (one of the best NLE’s ever made) to Premiere in 2003 and even being involved with the beta team for many years, I’ve never been able to understand why it crashes and hangs so damn much. Maybe the DV guys haven’t seen this, but I saw it enough times working with HD-SDI uncompressed to switch the Final Cut Pro a couple of weeks ago.
That in itself has been problematic from a re-learning point of view, but at least I don’t get the unstability that makes Premiere unworkable (for me) in a real world situation. I’ve got CS4 on my brand new 8-core Mac and it still crashes and siezes up on that box! (I was a Window CS4 user before)
There are a lot of great thinbg that Premiere has over FCP, starting with the title generator. It has such potential. But geez, I’d run out of patience…

Actually the Blackmagic 10-bit 1080i export looks good on the Mac. Maybe it’s a Prodocoder / PC thing. Life’s too short for all this.

Do you mean as Pro-res HQ? That is still not uncompressed? I need to keep it as clean and uncompressed as possible for the Procoder downconversion.

I know I’m just being an elephant in the room. If only the very best of FCP and PPro could be in the same package it would be a happy world. I’m going to have to research the under-the-hood machinations of OSX. But there’s no better way to learn than on a real job. If you have the time, it is tough-love way of picking up a new system’s quirks.

I’m also looking at upgrading from a 3 to a 4. I’ve read that the 4 has a “digital paper” rougher texture on the tablet which may not suit NLE systems; rather than Photoshopshop/Illustrator users.

I bought my new 8-core Mac Pro last week and it came pre-installed with Snow Leopard, so no choice for me. It seems okay.
