Wacom Intuos 3 vs. Intous 4- anyone have an opinion on which unit is better for editing in FCP and Shake? Is the difference big enough to justify the price difference?
PS: Thanks to those who have helped me through these forums recently – You’ve been a BIG help! Thank You!!

Personally I prefer Intuos 2. I don’t care for all the buttons they added because I always have one hand on the keyboard.

Can’t speak about the 4, but in my experience the 3 had worse build quality and got “squeaky” as the plastic settled over months of use. The 2’s are rock solid.

As for price: Wacom are expensive. But they work FOR YEARS ON END. I’ve still got a 6×8 Intous 1 that I keep with my laptop (back when they still thought beige plastic was attractive.) Works like a charm.

I’ve had a three for several years. Its never squeaked…ever!

I also find i don’t use the buttons, as i have enough keyboard shortcuts to remember across all the different apps i use. I probably would use them on a 4 because it has the leds to remind you what each button does.

By far the most important thing for me is the ergonomics of using a pen and good sized tablet over scrubbing around with a block of soap on a rope! Which ever model you choose, get a widescreen one – i have both wide and standard, and the wide is so much more useable when working on a two screen setup.

I’m also looking at upgrading from a 3 to a 4. I’ve read that the 4 has a “digital paper” rougher texture on the tablet which may not suit NLE systems; rather than Photoshopshop/Illustrator users.

I usually have a sheet of paper over mine to give a more textured and controlled feeling.

Also, contrary to most users here apparently, I prefer the smaller tablets that let me rest the side of my hand on the tablet and swivel about that rather than have to have my whole arm move.

No experience of the Intuous4 though but love my tablets.
