Getting bad gamma shift on Uncompressed Export
Have a real tight deadline – 2 hours! Have only migrated to MAC/FCP a week ago from Adobe.
I do all my H264 movs for station delivery on my Procoder PC system. I’m trying to get a 10-bit uncompressed master export from the FCP7 timeline (source was a 10-bit AVC-Intra Varicam – ProRes HQ).
But all my exports are coming out extremely dark. What’s happening here. Is there a good 10-bit export format that will work. ProRes imports into the PC without gamma shift but isn’t this more lossy than uncompressed? Need help quick! I’m using a Decklink HD Extreme card. Thanks, Peter

Why transcode? Exporting a self contained movie from the timeline (File > Export > Quicktime Movie) will be fine.

Do you mean as Pro-res HQ? That is still not uncompressed? I need to keep it as clean and uncompressed as possible for the Procoder downconversion.

Actually the Blackmagic 10-bit 1080i export looks good on the Mac. Maybe it’s a Prodocoder / PC thing. Life’s too short for all this.

Your footage is already ProRes HQ, which is compressed, yes. But very good compression. The quality of Uncompressed, without the file size. Converting it to uncompressed (which really isn’t UNCOMPRESSED, that too is a form of compression) you are now adding a layer of compression and losing a slight bit of quality.
BUT…the ProCoder is PC based, right? Well then you’ll need the ProRes Decoder for PCs, or if you have QT 7.6 on that system, it should see it fine.

Peter mentioned that he is using BlackMagic 10b.
This may be causing the Gamma Shift.
You can not go to PC with Apple 10b.

The decoder is not needed any more. Is embed in the last version of QT Player for Window.cheers,

Peter, I think you may be misunderstanding the process here.
you have a timeline, let’s say it’s ProRes HQ. When you export a selfcontained movie of your timeline, it is a copy of your media in to one condensed Quicktime file. It will be the exact media you are wating in FCP. When you transcode that material to another codec, it’s not going to ‘clean it up’. All the anomalies will just get transcoded in to that new file. Besides, ProRes is a full raster 10bit (albeit compressed) codec. It is totally fine and of the utmost quality at a fraction of the Uncompressed file size. Just use the ProRes Export and you are A-OK.

Yes you can, you just have to download free codecs. There’s an uncompressed codec for windows that is free from AJA (and probably Blackmagic too).

Right. You can open the AJA and the BM, but not the Apple 10b.

Yes you can. It’s all just the 2vuy or v210 codec.

Nope Rafael.
Jeremy is correct.
It is possible to read the apple 10bit UC codec on windows or linux as as 2Vuy in both 8 or 10bit since apples default compression uses a standard DCT compression schema,however it is not called Apple 10bit in windows.
