So yesterday I committed to doing a job start to finish in X. I did go to After Effects for titles but other than that I stayed in FCPX the whole time. Things went alright though the Color Board is hit and miss for me. Sometimes it does just what I need and other times it just can’t deliver.

Well, I finished the spot and output a 720p approval clip and sent it off. Then I noticed a color correction that I missed (and would surely be pointed out) and re-opened the application and the project I had exported and closed just 5 minutes earlier. Lo and behold the first :03 of the spot/project/timeline were MISSING. Yep. Just cut off. Total length of the piece was now :03 shorter and the front of it was just gone.

And that’s why I can’t take this mess seriously. I don’t have time for junk like that.

So I used the edit as a rough cut and re-did the whole thing in PPro and all is good.

I have a live music/party shoot planned for this Monday. We’ll use 2 cameras (D7 and XF100) and grab sound from the board for a song or two to edit against. I will try my best to start and finish this job in this new version of FCPX. Over the past year I have made it through 2 edits on this software. I really hope this time is different. I have so much Photoshop/After Effects/Illustrator stuff in most of my jobs that it’s silly to not use CS6. But this thing coming up should be pretty straight forward editorial/image fx. I will try.

I too have found MXF with FCPX to be a nightmare. We shoot MXF, edit and finish with PPro and AE (CS6) with no problems. I take EVERY job I do (seriously, every damn one of them) into FCPX when I’m done and try to redo them there. This is to keep me up to speed on FCPX and hopefully learn a new trick or two. I’ve made it through maybe 5 of them over the past year. Things just get mucked up, slowed down, and frustratingly unhappy.

i wish the best to all of you who have managed to make money off this NLE. I really do. I’ll keep trying to get it act like I know a good editor can, but it just seems like it’s all work arounds and third party expenses to just be functional.

Copy the .vob files and change the extension to .mpg. That usually works. You can edit with them or run them thru AME to make prores/dnxhd copies of them.

  • Yeah. 10.8.2 & 6.0.2.

  • No slowdowns but I’ve had RAM upgrades from 8 to 16 when I went to CS6 so who can say?

  • 2011 MBP. 2.2i7, 16 gig, TB Display, GoFlex drives through TB and FW800.

  • Upgrade them both. CS6 is light years ahead of CS5.5 and below. I’ve used them all for years. You’re totally editing with one hand behind your back right now. As far as the AVCHD thing is concerned, rest assured it is not a problem. Yeah, the file structure looks weird at first in the Finder, but you look at it in Prelude and you see all your clips as single clips whether they’re spanned or not.

Also, highlight any title in your bin and under File you can export that title as a .prtl that can be imported into any project you choose.
