  • Should I Upgrade – Mac 10.8 and / or Premiere Pro 6

Posted by Keith Moreau on October 3, 2012 at 4:33 pm

So I’m currently on Premiere Pro 5.5.2 and Mac OS 10.7.3

The reason I have not upgraded to 10.8 is I have heard in the forums that there are problems, specifically with AVCHD and not being able to re-establish links once they are broken after import because of how Mac 10.8 works. Is this an insurmountable solution? If so that is quite disappointing, i think the problem was reported several months ago?

And the reason I have not upgraded to Premiere Pro CS 6 is that
    1) There are no reports that it is any faster than 5.5.2 – just better GUI (though I’m ok with 5.5.2)
    2) I doesn’t do well with spanned AVCHD clips (pretty much 80% of what I do)

So any advice on either of these ‘upgrades’? It has been a while (like months) for both of these issues.

    Thank you!

Upgrade them both. CS6 is light years ahead of CS5.5 and below. I’ve used them all for years. You’re totally editing with one hand behind your back right now. As far as the AVCHD thing is concerned, rest assured it is not a problem. Yeah, the file structure looks weird at first in the Finder, but you look at it in Prelude and you see all your clips as single clips whether they’re spanned or not.

Thanks Paul, have you found the speed of CS6 on your Mac to be at least as fast as 5.5? And what Mac are you using, if I may ask?

No slowdowns but I’ve had RAM upgrades from 8 to 16 when I went to CS6 so who can say?

I assume you are also at 10.8. 10.8.1 or 10.8.2? I’ve been getting a lot of “Serious Errors” on 10.6.8 (which I prefer for some other sfw) and 10.7.4. On 6.0.2 PP. Waiting for new Kona drivers. On current recommended for LHi on the Mac Pro.
