I’m fairly sure that AE ‘officially’ supports .mxf but have a feeling mxf is one of those standards that isn’t actually… you know, standard. What’s the mxf from?

You might find it easier to use photos of a hand, rather then live footage – one open and ‘reaching’ and then another closed ‘pulling’ – then move the hand about in AE. Depending on the shot you want, and your keying skills, it’s possibly easier/quicker, and you’ll get more control over timing.
As for the actual poster pull, page turn is probably a good start – but ‘scrumpleing’ is pretty hard. From what I remember of trying to do a ‘Folded page look’ a while back, the best method was looking at folded page tutorials for photoshop, and trying to use those principles.

Depending on which AE version you’re on, this might work differently – but there should be a little padlock symbol in the viewer window (On the top tab) which enables you to ‘lock’ it to its current view. So in the main comp lock the viewer, then enter the nested comp and edit away. You can also the window menu to add both comp viewers, so you can see what your doing in the nested comp as well as the parent.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen anywhere offering such videos that doesn’t offer a guide/help, but anyway – in a nutshell set your blend mode to multiply. Try other modes or luma key as well to see their effects but multiply is what works best.

Hmm.. that’s odd to be honest. MP3’s are also not the height of professional quality, but I’ve definitely used them in my productions and never had any problems importing them myself.
Does it refuse to import them or just refuse to play them? Because if it’s the latter, be aware AE only plays sound through RAM previews – so it can seem the file won’t play even when it will.

As they’re professional quality software, Adobe products tend to ignore the Mpeg importing format as, well mpegs are mostly useless for editing.
This has less to do with Adobe and more to do with the fact that Mpeg is a lossless format.
You can Google for the exact specifics, but how I understand it is – mpeg works by making a key frame every x number of frames – which is a full frame image. The inbetween frames however just contain the differences and are layered on the previous keyframe, so it all doesn’t duplicate data. Fine for watching, but useless for editing – generally they expect you to use something better. That said for small web things, or quick stuff it would be nice if it worked better. I’ve used MP4’s before so it is possible(*), just don’t expect gold.
*I thought I’d just imported mine straight in to be honest – try converting the file with something (Media coder or Super are probably what I used) or maybe checking if you have the correct codec.

I’ve got no tips whatsoever I’m just here to stand in the corner and chant “fight! fight! fight! fight!” (I’ve always wanted to see that motion tracker whacked around a bit, never managed to make it work well for me at all).

It pretty much says it in the video description there – Photoshop.
Take your 2D picture, use any selection tools you like and cut and paste onto separate layers the elements you wish to make ‘3D’. Then using clone/heal or copy paste or whatever, mend the background so it doesn’t have people shaped holes in. (Depending on motion, you might not need to do much – the original element will hide most of the hole)
Then bring the PSD into AE and move the element layers in 3D space and scale them so it looks normal. Add a Camera and move it and you have your (semi) 3D.
A good variation if you have strong perspective lines is to use the Vanishing point filter and save/import that as a VPE – can really give some depth.

March 21, 2009 at 3:51 pm in reply to: Solid State Drives and Adobe AE and Pr, are they compatable??Quote from here:
“contrary to the statement that CS4 “cannot install on… flash-based storage devices,” the apps install and run perfectly well on solid-state drives (SSDs), such as those available in the MacBook Air and the new Sony VAIO.”
You should be fine.

Can’t say I’ve ever had this problem but you can probably ‘trial and error’ it to find where the problem might be. (or solve it if its just the size). Split the file into two by saving copies with half the layers in each. If they don’t import split those into two again etc.
If one specific file breaks then check your effects, some of the more advanced ones don’t play very nice with AE.
