  • AE crashes during large .ai file import

Posted by Jessica Chriss on March 20, 2009 at 3:39 pm

I normally import .ai files into AE without a problem. But I am trying to work with a particularly large .ai file at 6.5 MB. The file has 110 layers. Every time I try to import the file as a layered composition, AE freezes and I have to force quit. Even when importing as footage, the file does not show any of the graphics. Also I tried deleting some of the layers and the file became 4.4 MB but still crashed AE.

Is there an Illustrator file size limit or layer limit when importing? And any ideas on the best solution for this problem so that I can import my file and still have all of the necessary layers?

    Thanks.

Can’t say I’ve ever had this problem but you can probably ‘trial and error’ it to find where the problem might be. (or solve it if its just the size). Split the file into two by saving copies with half the layers in each. If they don’t import split those into two again etc.

If one specific file breaks then check your effects, some of the more advanced ones don’t play very nice with AE.

Only in after effects do children get to pick and whip their parents.

Try flattening the Illustrator file to one layer and re-import into AE.
