I am trying to import an HDV sequence from Avid 3.5 into After Effects CS4. The programs are on the same machine. I am running Windows Vista 64bit.

The media was imported into Avid as HDV 1080i MXF
    Avid Project type: 1080i/59.94
    Raster Dimension: 1440×1080

I’ve tried exporting the AAF in several ways, using all the export methods available. And tried to transcode the media into several different formats. However, each time I try importing the AAF file into After Effects I receive this error message…

“After Effects error: File “__.mxf” cannot be opened, it may be in an unsupported format.”

I tried importing and AAF file that had .omf based media files and it worked perfectly.

Does After Effects CS4 support Avid .mxf files?
Does After Effects CS4 support long GOP media from Avid?

I’m fairly sure that AE ‘officially’ supports .mxf but have a feeling mxf is one of those standards that isn’t actually… you know, standard. What’s the mxf from?

Only in after effects do children get to pick and whip their parents.

MXF is a container format, much like QuickTime. What matters is what’s inside the MXF file. Here’s a quote from “Supported import formats” that tells what contents of MXF files After Effects currently supports:

    “Media eXchange Format (MXF)
MXF is a container format. After Effects can only import some kinds of data contained within MXF files. After Effects can import the Op-Atom variety used by Panasonic DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, and DVCPRO HD video cameras to record to Panasonic P2 media. After Effects can also import XDCAM HD files in MXF format.”

Of course, we’re always adding support for new formats in updates, so be sure to pay attention to your Adobe Updater and/or announcements of updates to After Effects.

For information about OMF and AAF import, see “Importing AAF and OMF files (Windows only)”.

See thats the problem. I tried transcoding the media to several different formats, including the ones listed. I also tried both rasters. (1440×1080 and 1920×1080)

    I tried…
    DNxHD
    XDCAM HD
    DVCPro HD
    Avid 1:1

All received the same error message when I tried importing the AAF.

I have the latest update to After Effects installed. (9.0.1.51)

If this workflow isn’t supported, is there any other solution (besides Automatic Duck) to send my HD Avid sequence into After Effects?
