I have a feeling the answer to my question is NO, but its worth asking anyway….

Working on a project recently, when doing multiple sky replacements i found myself having problems lining things up how i wanted. The reason was that the sky i had created was in a comp (because i used several lens flares to simulate a sun, graduated background, colour tints, fractal noise clouds, etc), and for each shot i needed to reposition the sun to match up with the on-set lighting.

so for the question… Is there a way to adjust the layers of a nested comp whilst watching the overall project output?

Every time i had to alter my sun position, i found i had to open the comp, guess roughly where i thought it needed to move, then jump back to the main comp check it, refine it….a long and arduous task when there are lots of shots to do.

It strikes me that this is such a no-brainer that there must be a way to do it and i’m just too dumb to figure it out.

    regards
    Adam

Depending on which AE version you’re on, this might work differently – but there should be a little padlock symbol in the viewer window (On the top tab) which enables you to ‘lock’ it to its current view. So in the main comp lock the viewer, then enter the nested comp and edit away. You can also the window menu to add both comp viewers, so you can see what your doing in the nested comp as well as the parent.

Only in after effects do children get to pick and whip their parents.

    Dear Adam,
If I remember correctly you can find the answer by watching this tutorial-

    https://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/magic_glass/

after a while he explains how to watch two comps at once to make accurate adjustments. if you’re patient you’ll find out how!

A nifty shortcut for this kind of workflow is Cmd+Option+Shift+N (on mac).

It creates a new comp viewer next to the current one and locks it. So you don’t have to go through the menu for a new viewer, then lock it and dock it. Nice!
