I have often used handbrake to reduce the file size of programs recorded off the air. I keep all of the files as Pal 720×576 at 700 which is acceptable for my purpose.

I recently recoded a program which was mid HD range 1440×1080. I(‘m unsure as to what settings I should try. Do I change the frame size,bit rate or both?

Any ideas?

The cord is plugged into the headphone jack because I didn’t have a cord that was suitable for the speakers which appear to use some European system that requires you to put a red or white cord under a clip.

It seems that a preamp is unnecessary & that I can get the wave display to go as high as I want if I turn the players volume up.

I suppose that once I have captured what audio I want its just a case of saving portions of the file in any audio format.

Thanks for the help. And if you have any additional ideas as for using the Vegas audio FX please suggest them.

I should have added that the wave line suggests that highest it gets to is about -12DB.

Incidentally the player is interesting. Its a Sony that has 2 cassette reorder/players inbuilt both of which can play or record onto both sides. This means that you could capture 4 sides into one file.

The reason even popped up was because I was on a cruise & was approached about others as what I was doing what & how did my footage end up. I still have raw footage from previous shoots & was able to show them. They would have been more impressed had they seen a finished product with titles music etc & I knew that I had lots of storage just sitting idle. Maybe if I do another cruise I’ll put older projects onto a tablet instead.

Thanks for the effort to reply to my question. It will be quicker & easier just for me to re render the file out again since I still have the veg file. As I said in the original, my question was mainly that of trying to understand how everything works and finding out it a render would result in quality loss.

A friend also told me about another video thing that needs fixing. He likes to record free to air TV onto his PC so that he can chop out the adds & then convert the original,(MPE2 or TS stream I think) to the much smaller H264 file in an MKV container. His problem is that he wishes to keep the subtitles. It seems that the various programs that are used to do this requires him to extract & save the original subtitles from the program that does the editing & then put back the same titles into the program that’s doing the recode. You would think that this should all be automated.

I can’t recall exactly just what template I had used to create the MPEG4 file I do recall that it said that it was 1920 x 1080. I thought that I had ticked the box to automatically make output match input but apparently not.

I also thought that possible a MPEG4 file could display at exactly the same quality as the AVC one used by DVDA,& if this was the case maybe it might be possible to deinterlace the file before reassembling it by the Blue-ray player.

It’s such a pity that the electronic companies didn’t have enough for sight,when TV went digital to just get rid of all the different systems pal/ntsc, different frame works etc & just have one universal standard for all digital TV. I just suppose that life wasn’t meant to get this easy because it would allow less manipulation & control by big business.

My friend likes what he sees of Vegas when he sees some of the things that I can easlly do with the program. At the same time I know that he is thoroughly disalussioned with all of the Windows problems he has.

So when do you use MPEG4 or some other codec? Is this something that would only be done if you were rendering to either a PC or to a Media Player like Western Digital WDTV or equivalent?

I have another old PC here which I connected up & did all of the updates for all of the software. I opened Playmemories & it said that my camera wasn’t registered & that I needed to connect it via USB which I did.

Again nothing happened. I suspect that the problem is in the camera which plays perfectly except for this. Maybe I haven’t gotten the software switch set correctly or something like that.

Should I be able to capture the latest files by just using Vegas Pro 10 without Playmemories software?
I had hopped to show someone the video I shot last week before I go on an short overseas holiday next week.
