Hmm.. did you upgrade to Quicktime 7.4? If so, that’s causing a lot of problems for a lot of people – so I’m not totally suprised.

First, give trashing your preferences a try. Delete the pref file in User > Library > Preferences > Final Cut Pro User Data.

When you relaunch and it still crashes – I’d say think about downgrading to Quicktime 7.3 (this is assuming you are now using Quicktime 7.4). Instructions for that can be found here: https://www.paulescandon.com/blog/?p=39

I hope one of these methods work for you.

I’d check out Yugma.com – it’s conferencing software similar to WebEx or GoToMeeting but there’s a free version you can try out at no cost. You can see their system or share yours, and it happens in real time. I’ve used the software before – and while there are some quirks with it I’d recommend it.

I will warn, however, that video playback will not be in real time, and it will be very hard to follow if that is your main purpose. You will, however, be able to see the whole interface, what they’re doing, give guidance, etc. It might work – give it a shot.

  • As you probably know the Mac Mini needs to have Final Cut Studio installed also to play the DVCPRO HD file that you created from Final Cut. Is Final Cut installed in that machine by any chance? If it is – I would say just try playing the native quicktime to see if the machine can handle it.

If that isn’t an option then you may want to give the Motion-Jpeg codec a shot. I’m not sure exactly how this codec stacks up in terms of taxing your system with other codecs… but I have compressed HD footage to MJPEG at 75% quality before and I couldn’t see any quality loss. So that’s an option too.

Give it a shot and see if it works out. I know H.264 is very taxing so that’s probably not an option.

  • Does this film exist in digital format (a file) already or do you need to capture from a tape and get it into your mac mini? The codec you would use will depend on what the film was shot in. I’ve never tried to run HD from a Mac Mini – I imagine it would be possible in some instances – but I can also imagine it sometimes not being fast enough to support some HD codecs.

    Give me some more info.

Sending to motion and then saving the motion file and having it update in the Final Cut timeline is the workflow for getting optical flow retiming to work in Final Cut. It’s not integrated in Final Cut yet (soon I hope).

January 29, 2008 at 7:37 pm in reply to: Why are my favorites not being saved?

Your favorites get saved in your preference file. When you trash your preference file or in this case Final Cut seems to be deleting it – your favorites get tossed.

One really handy tip is that you can save your favorite effects and transitions in the project itself (just drag them into a bin in your browser). That way if you have another crash or have to reset your preferences, your favorite effects and transitions will still be in their proper place inside your project.

    Give it a shot. Peace.

January 29, 2008 at 7:24 pm in reply to: 4 audio channel movie

First, make sure your timeline is set up to output 4 channels of audio. Go to Settings > Settings > Audio Outputs tab. Select 4 channels instead of the default 2. You have the option to set mono tracks or stereo tracks.

After you’ve done that, right click on patch panel area of each track and change the audio output setting to the audio channel you want that track outputting on.

I do this all the time and Quicktime will output as many audio output channels as you specify.
