Totally agree with you Sean. As a registered user of my software and someone who doesn’t pirate – I really cannot understand the ferocity and fervor of all this holier than thou finger wagging. As someone who bought the software what do you care if Jonny-down-the-street downloaded his software illegally? How does that seriously effect you? It doesn’t. Sure the act of pirates might be built into your cost – but I’d say that is minimal at best.

I know personally that a lot of my friends and people I associate with on a PROFESSIONAL level are software pirates in some form or another – and do I care? Heck no I don’t care. It’s about as low level of a legal infraction that there is in my opinion – on par with a parking ticket or J-walking in my opinion. A lot of these posts are so vitriolic and have the overtones of an RIAA or MPAA lawyer. I’ve never known common folk to want to align themselves in that way.

And Sean your point about the licensing agreement is well received – I would prefer an uproar over the restrictive wording of the licensing agreement over the blind drinking of the Apple kool-aid and assenting to all their legal positions. But that’s just me.

Oh and sorry Tim if me continuing this thread personally upsets you – I’ve been contributing here for years and years and I never knew that I could offend admins when there was still clearly still fresh dissenting opinions on the matter. I think you have the power to lock or delete this post so if you feel it necessary – feel free to exercise that power.

I’m going to be very unpopular for going against the grain of all these “shame on you” messages but then again that has never been my style. I will answer your question.

I’ve used Little Snitch and it works great. I like to know when my computer is calling out over the Internet at anytime – it’s helpful to see when apps you never knew were active and contacting servers in far off places for who knows what reasons. It’s a tool – and I know software pirates use it but it has a lot of helpful non piracy uses.

That being said – I think the Final Cut check that you speak of never contacts the Internet – it simply looks at your network (maybe via Bonjour) to see if there is another copy of Final Cut running. If that happens, the second Final Cut will not start. Unless you can modify Little Snitch to alert you of all inside network traffic (something that would be a pain to see) – then it’s not really going to help you.

It sounds like it could be the ProRes quicktime components and maybe not the AJA card drivers. Have you tried reinstalling Final Cut Pro which should also reinstall the ProRes quicktime components? If not, that might be worth a shot. I use a Kona 3 with ProRes all the time.

    Hope it helps.

Hey – if that’s possible which I didn’t know it was then that would be potentially a really good solution to my problem. I’m going to give it a try. Thanks!

The X1900XT card works fine with the MXO. I don’t know why Matrox hasn’t put that on their site yet – all the ATI’s work fine with the MXO. I’m using this card and the MXO.

I am an MXO user. I can tell you that the MXO will not accelerate playback in any way – so if your final cut can play in real time the footage you’re working with, then the MXO can display that footage. If you need to render, the MXO isn’t going to speed anything up.

    It’s a great product though.

Yeah – if I remember correctly version 5.1 was the first Universal version of the app and it came by way of a mail-in upgrade. I think we sent Apple our discs and they sent us back the upgrade to 5.1. I think there was a bit of cost involved – maybe $100… I can’t remember exactly myself.

I’ve too wondered if there was any way now to do the upgrade as 5.1 is an older product… not sure where you might be able to find the 5.1 upgrade if you can find it at all.

  • LiveType works well as it is part of the FCS package – however I’ve never found much use for it. It can do some cool things – so that’s definitely an option.

I do most of my non-animated graphics in Photoshop – but I’ve never really liked the way Final Cut handles the PSD files directly. I think this may have changed a bit in FCP 6 – although I’m still using 5.1.4 at my day job and it has problems – especially when you start making heavy use of layer styles. What I’ve always done in Photoshop was reduced the graphic to one layer when I was finished and saved the file as a 32-bit PICT with an alpha channel – Final Cut has always worked really well with this file type in my experience.

Well Fredo is on an iBook G3 so that might be his problem.

  • I would recommend first setting up your system with the stock RAM and then when you’ve made sure everything is running correctly you should then install your OWC Ram. This is exactly what I did when I set up my system a few months ago.

Also, if you go and sell your ram on eBay like I did (I had no use for it), you can at least be certain that it’s not faulty.
