If you go to Audio Video Settings > Device Control Preset tab – you can try to change the pre and post roll options for the deck you’re using… you might be able to lower the pre roll duration and still get the deck to accurately capture… but what your experiencing is far from being out of the ordinary. It mostly depends on your deck but most likely you will lose some frames in there.

Howabout ProRes422 HQ? That should give you pretty darn good quality.

November 4, 2007 at 12:24 am in reply to: FCP needs to render after applying mask effect

    Hey there,

What version of FCP are you using?

FCP has two settings that determine real time playback – Safe RT and Unlimited RT. Unlimited RT is the engine that will dynamically attempt to play back filters that support it based on your CPU and GPU. If you haven’t set Unlimited RT from the RT drop down in the timeline then there is a stricter criteria on what gets rendered and what doesn’t. Make sure you’re set to Unlimited RT and see if this works out for you.

It sounds like a similar problem I had once. My solution was to trash my Quicktime receipts in HD > Library > Receipts – Give it a try (feel free to back up the files you trash before you trash them, just to a different folder somewhere). Let me know if it helps.

Your only other option is to set your vtr option as a non-controllable device, hit play on your deck/cam, and then hit capture now. It will capture the whole tape – the only problem is that it will problem lose timecode sync at some point. But if you’re okay with that – that is an option.

October 26, 2007 at 11:11 pm in reply to: Running into Kona 3 problems that require hard reset

    The AJA site says:

AJA Driver Compatibility as of KONA Version 4.0 is as follows:
FCP 6.0.x (Final Cut Studio 2)- Kona Driver version 4.0
    FCP 5.1.x – Kona Driver versions 3.1 through 3.4
FCP 5.0.x – Kona Driver version 3 (first Universal Binary version)

So I can’t really upgrade to 4.0 since I’m still running 5.1.4 based on this… oh and I am using QT 7.2 also.

Oh yes I did just try this after reading it on the AJA site. I’ll see if I still notice the problem since this change.

September 13, 2007 at 9:34 pm in reply to: new mac mini and fcp 2?

Instead of tell you what you should or shouldn’t do – I’ll just try to answer your question. As the previous posters already said, it will work. I personally run Final Cut Studio 2 on my first gen MacBook and it works fine. Color WILL install, however it will not run because of the graphics situation. Final Cut Pro 6 works just as good as Final Cut Pro 5.

And also to shed a little more light regarding the single firewire bus that the first responder mentioned–even though my firewire drive and deck share 1 firewire bus, I’ve never have had any problems during capture, playback, and lay-off. In theory there could be problems, but in a year plus using this machine to edit DV, HDV, and even some DVCPRO HD 720 footage on and external firewire drive while using a DV deck, I’ve never had any problems with stuff that was rendered on a timeline.

So while there are definitely much better options out there as far as hardware for running FCS, the mac mini should work without problems.

    Hope this helps. Peace.
