My first question is, I am shooting in 720 24p and exporting using compressor (DVD best Quality 90min 16:9). Is that the best quality compressor setting for an SD DVD?

Two, with the same HD footage, I want to be able to burn to an HD DVD or Blu-ray in the future. I shoot with P2, so I don’t have a source tape and also don’t have the space to keep the original media once the project is finished. I don’t want to lose quality by upcoverting my MPEG-2 SD finished video to HD. Here is what I was thinking. I would export a second version of my finished product using the compressor setting of uncompressed 8- or 10-bit HD. Would that allow me to burn a true HD DVD later? What would be the best setting for that?

If you want to get the best quality possible DVD, you should start for making the best quality possible movie.

You can do better quality SD DVD. Using “Short GOPs” and “Open GOPs” while rising the data rate you can get better picture. However you must be careful with the total data rate (video+audio). You can have problems to play those DVDs in some old domestic players. In computers drivers normally they will play great.

Make a true HD DVD is not a matter of the codec that you set in your time-line. The codec will play in the quality of your master movie if is HD like if is SD. Make a HD movie and use the HD DVD settings in Compressor.

Uncompressed 8-bit HD takes up a lot more space than DVCProHD. Better to just keep it in DVCProHD.

Howabout ProRes422 HQ? That should give you pretty darn good quality.
