I know the effect you are talking about. I’ll have to get to an XP machine to see if anything obvious comes out. I agree; I can’t imagine the programmer doing anything too complex for that effect.

You could ‘reverse engineer’ it. Make a color gradient in PS and have it viewable on screen. Do the XP ‘shutdown’ and then hit ‘print screen’. Cancel the shutdown and paste the image (which should be a copy of the screen that was displayed when you hit print screen). You can then use the eyedropper tool to see the delta between the original and the new color.

I can just about guarantee that the backgrounds in that video are separate images. Either pre-planned (the photographer took a picture with the person in it and another picture without the person), or, more likely, they just used some stock background photos. Don’t waste your time trying to fill in the ‘hole’ of the removed person with shrubbery, water, trees, etc., just use another picture that matches that mood.

Try using the Vibrance setting and lowering the value. That may be close?

Or, put a B/W image on top of the color and then change its opacity.

Can’t decipher your script comments, but it appears you want to make an image larger. I usually just select the layer and then hit ctrl-t to transform the layer (handles will appear). You can also do that from the layer menu I believe.
If this is your problem, then I would recommend further discussion in the Photoshop Basics forum.

Not sure it is possible to ‘freeze frame’ the menu video, but there are some options…

1) make your video freeze frame. In other words, your video will have motion for the 10 seconds, and then the remaining video would be the freeze frame. Of course, you would have to decide how long you want that freeze to be (50 seconds?) before it would loop or play the default chapter.

2) A bit trickier, but just have the motion menu time out to a second menu which looks like the last frame of your video. There would be a little stutter and you would start a new audio track.

What version of Encore are you using?

Why not just use the ‘default’ menu that comes with Encore and paste the image you want into it? I tend to always start with the ‘blank’ menu template in Encore and then edit it.

So, you want the white square to appear next to the words when the user presses the up and down buttons on the DVD remote? That is possible with the button highlights. Search for ‘encore menu button highlights’ and you should get quite a few hits. Here is one from Adobe:

Is the white square in your menu a button highlight, or is it drawn in as part of the picture? If it is a highlight, then you just need to copy that highlight to the other words (making sure you move it to the correct spot next to each word). If you drew it in as part of the picture, then you need to ‘erase’ it and use button highlights.

It sounds like you are loading up a widescreen menu, and this is giving you the black bars on top and bottom. What is the picture size of the menu when you are in Photoshop?
