Maybe this is a dumb question, but I’m guessing Ken’s method would be frowned upon if you don’t already own a previous version of FCP. I haven’t looked at the ProRes license agreement, if there is one.

FWIW, I went with the SmallHD AC7. I thought it might be too large and heavy to mount directly on the 5D MkII but it isn’t. It’s a very light monitor.

For $600 I got all the features I want: DSLR scaling, focus assist, and it uses the same batteries as the Canon 5D (with required a $60 add-on bracket). I also got the SmallHD Hot Shoe Ball Mount.

I ran across this somewhere but haven’t tested it.

You can download a free 30-day trial of Final Cut Pro X from Apple’s website which installs the ProRes codecs.

The 30-day period doesn’t start until you open FCP X for the first time; however, the ProRes codecs are active and usable. So, in theory you could use the ProRes codecs forever, providing you never open FCP X.

I went through with the plan and shot vertically for the WS and horizontally for the MS. It worked fine.

Clearly, DSLRs aren’t optimal for shooting green screen (but neither was DV yet lots of people did it). You’ve gotta work with what you have.

Very interesting. According the FCP article, the burned DVD has an “average bit rate of 14.7 Mbps and a max bit rate of 17 Mbps” due to the limitations of the DVD’s red laser. I’m guessing I’d have to limit the data rate with Encore as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. Has anyone used Ikan monitors before? I like their feature sets and prices.

I’ve tinkered with Linux and installed it on a few different machines so that’s not a problem for me.

It seems like UCLA’s program would go a long way for exposing me to different aspects of the restoration process as well as be good for making valuable connections – as opposed to trying to learn the tools on my own and then break in somehow.

    Thanks for the response.

I’m not actually using any automatic settings. I sincerely hope Adobe hasn’t simply abandoned a filter and left it in broken. I’d like to know I can count on the filters they’ve included. And besides, I kind of like the Shadow/Highlights filter, I feel that it’s unique and does things that the color corrector can’t quite replicate.

Thanks for the tips. Will a .flv video file play on a PC in Windows Media Player?

I was going to ask the same question but found this post. There doesn’t seem to be a consensus here.

If I export using “Match Sequence Settings” am I retaining full (or near full) image quality? WHen I edit Canon DSLR footage and export with “Match Sequence Settings”, this gives me a .mpeg file, which is neither the same as the source footage or even playable in Quicktime.
