I realize that, but the drop shadow layer controls are very basic, unless I am missing something. Admitedly i do not know Motion inside/out so there may be more power to it somewhere.

I like the progressive blur and perspective adjustments that can be made in the new FCPX drop shadow.

Tutorials are great (Ripple Training comes to mind) but don’t forget the free manual that comes with the application, it can answer many questions too.

Tried Clip Skimming in the timeline yet ? Very valuable INMHO when compositing… may make you like skimming (oh yes, it IS called the Skimmer 😉

You can search your hundreds of filters by name, which you couldn’t do in 7, it was that idiotic… 😉

And the favorite folder would empty itself if you had to trash your preferences…

Frankly, the more you insist on using X the way you used 7 the more frustrated you’ll grow and the more you’ll hate X. It is a different piece of software with a different philosophy.

That does not make it perfect but most of its qualities will become obvious if you accept to look at it with a fresh eye.

If you are old enough, think of the days you went from a Zeno DVE to a Quantel Encore, or when you ditched the linear world to go non linear… funny how in those days one had to constantly adapt as there was little standardization of the interfaces we used…

Another thing to take into consideration is your hardware. Aside from likes/dislikes of the philosophy behind the software I see a lot of frustrated people trying to run it on hardware that can’t do it properly.

FCPX will satisfy you if it has the hardware to run on. Currently the best is a recent iMac with maxed RAM memory.

in 10.0.6 you can use the new function in the Clip menu : Reference New Parent Clip.

Hi,

I have an iMac with an iO XT and a Pegasus RAID, both connected via Thunderbolt. Never had to disconnect any of them in 10 months of constant use.

IO XT works well too. I upgraded the driver to 10.4.1 before doing the FCPX upgrade.

Hi Fabrizio,

So far I have nothing but praise for the Pegasus R6 RAID I bought last january. And it is very quiet. It sits 2 meters from me (cable length) and I can barely hear it. Also, does not seem to heat up, even this summer when it was nearly 40 Celsius here in Switzerland.

I have it tied up to a 2012 iMac with 32 GB of RAM and run FCPX on it with IOXT for monitoring. The setup works very well.
