We’re in the same boat, buddy. I would’ve quit working with Color and DaVinci if it wasn’t for the Wacom tablet, though of course I’d like a more or less proper panel. But we can get the job done, right?

Start by adding a new layer.
Use Marquee, and in the upper part of Photoshop, select Style: Fixed Ratio. Set Width: 16 Height 9.
Now, click and drag until you’re happy with the size. Fill it with black.
Select all (cmd+a) and use the Move tool, and center it in X and Y.
Deselect the selection.
CMD+click the layer so you select your 16:9 of black. Make a New Layer.
Invert selection and fill this with black. Delete the previous layer.The same goes for 4:3.. activate the Marquee tool, set 4:3.. and so on.

Sounds like a gobo to me.
I can see why, though I don’t know if I’d vote for this one. All though I guess many of us have experience with compositing, I’d rather actually get material that already had this done by someone else. Or if it’s really, really important, do it myself in a compositor rather than DaVinci.
But then again, I was put on test by a man who’s “been there” in one of the biggest post houses here. They use Mistika, and he was asking if I could do similar things in the same package, like logo and billboard replacement… So who knows, maybe they’d want something like this..

As a workaround, you could either save a still or save to a memory bank. I’ve assigned a button for “Delete node” too. Goes fast to just click-click-click.. All gone.

Arrow up / down toggles this. Don’t know why it’s not listed in the drop down menu. Other things I’ve added is toggle between All/Color/PTZR (for keyframing) and Render.
You do that by
– System Preferences
– Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts
– Add DaVinci to the list and type the menu item exactly (upper and lower case in place) as it’s written in the menu and add a shortcut to it– In the Logitech key mapping software, make a new Macro, give it a name and type the shortcut you just made – and there you go!
I have added all kinds of shortcuts this way.

I’m more or less in the same situation. I’m not in the “high-end” game. Nor do I have a panel, not even a Tangent Wave! Ever since I started with Color I’ve used two tools: A Wacom tablet and a ShuttlePRO2 (it was replaced with a Logitech G13 just recently – and it WORKS!)
I do various stuff for local and international cinema ads, short films and music videos.. Do I get the job done with these primitive ‘caveman’ tools? YES! Would I like a panel? Oh yes, please.. Even though there’s some “panel exclusive” tools, it’s far from impossible to work your way around DaVinci. And I agree, the interface USED to be cluttered and less intuitive. What I’ve seen of videos or screenshots pre Resolve 7 made my eyes spin.. NOW is the time to get Resolve.
I guess you already have the hardware in place, so why not ?

Just because some is asking for a few features doesn’t mean the tool is bad or that everyone wants the same. I wanted realtime playback in Color, but it’s not there yet? Does it make it a bad tool? NO! Worse? That’s… well… an interesting discussion. 😉

As I have said, and I’ve seen other mention it too: sound is a great tool and can be switched on or off any time for you to listen to the latest hits on your local radio.
Why is it a great to have sound? It helps you understand the scene and the mood. I’ve never graded anything that had a final master of the sound, nor do I think I’ll ever be in that position. But the recorded sound on set or even temporary ADR is really helpful. Sometimes even having temporary music sets the mood and aids in developing the look.
It’s not like DaVinci use the audio for each source clip. Nope. You’ll have to export the sound for the entire sequence you’re grading. Takes no time to do it.. 🙂 And synching? No need to really. It just WORKS!
