I’ll bet Vegas has allowed you to position the composite process in the effect chain for track video effects since they first allowed track level video effects.

They do document the ability to do this in the help file but it is kinda mentioned in passing. It does not have a “How Do I…” section that is task oriented where the topic title is, how do I apply a video effect to everything below a certain level/track.

[John Rofrano] “OMG! And to think that this has been there since Vegas Pro 10.0 and none of us knew about it?”

It seems Vegas has a very generalized data flow architecture. An advantage. Things like this tend to allow “features” not originally envisioned by someone fiddling with the data flow. Moving composite in the chain this case.

The advantage is that people can figure out things you might not think you can do.

The disadvantage, is it is not documented until they are aware and document as a feature.

I’ll bet a premiere adjustment layer have their limits, just like adjustment layers have limits in Photoshop. Things like this tend to happen when you implement a “feature”.

Turn off resampling. It defaults to on.

With resampling on, Vegas blends frames to create new ones if necessary to convert your source frame rate to the output frame rate. Normally if you go and exact multiple slower/faster, vegas will not create the blended frames.

With resample off Vegas will duplicate frames to fill the necessary space it needs to adjust frame rate, like 30 -> 29.97.

  • When you say, looks good on TV, what device is feeding the video stream to the TV? DVD, Blu-Ray, internet, media PC?

I’ll disagree that TV has more contrast and colors. Rec 709 (HDTV) and sRGB (typical computer display) are pretty similar color spaces. Nearly identical in fact.

Rec 709 in a digital encoding format is a bit more compressed with a 16-235 numeric range verses full computer range 0-255. This reduces the number of color shades available.

This 16-235 issue is a common problem with video playback since many camera sources are 0-255. This changes color and contrast if encoded without compensation.

If I take my 0-255 camera source and do not compensate, then on playback in a media player, the contrast jumps, blacks are crushed, whites are blown.

Main Concept AVC OpenCL does not support AMD graphics core next cards. AKA 7xxx series cards which includes your 7950.

Sony AVC does support GCN cards but Sony AVC is only partially GPU accelerated.

Sony Vegas itself (video prefs tab) does support the AMD GCN cards, but this usage all depends on what effects and such you use. Only the effects and transitions support GPU acceleration.

I also have a 7950. I previously had a 5850 and the Main Concept AVC OpenCL encoder really flew under the 5850.

August 22, 2013 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Copying events WITH track motion keyframes

Track motion keyframes are a part of the track and could care less if any events that may or may not exist. So to duplicate track keyframes duplicate the track.

Event pan/crop keyframes are a part of a specific event. You might want to animate your lower third with pan/crop if possible. The stretch to fit pan/crop option is probably something you would want to change. Pan/crop keyframes are copied with an event and move with the event, unlike track keyframes.

August 20, 2013 at 4:48 pm in reply to: how do I prevent this video corruption?

[Stephen Mann] “If you have to restart Vegas to get a clean encode, then something in your PC is corrupting the data in memory that Vegas is using. But it’s not Vegas.”

I’ll disagree with that. Bugs easily, and most commonly, exist where 99 of 100 or 999 of 1000 circumstances work but that one very specific situation fails. This is also why you have to be very careful fixing bugs.

Only processes running in kernel address space can possibly corrupt some other process memory without it’s consent.

Vegas is a very threaded, lookahead system and this makes reproducing an exact situation difficult if the issue is memory organization and corruption related.

If your Version of Vegas is one that was bundled with New Blue Titler Pro, then you might try the Smear transition included with that product.

It is not intended to create a swish pan effect, but it is similar in some aspects and it is FREE.

Sony should have an exchange site for uploading scripts. Adobe has had things like this for ages.

Free stuff is basically going to be automation functions via scripting, and some might be willing to share with the community.

There was a question about a swish pan transition on this forum. This is something you could do a script for in Vegas. A number of steps to do manually but can be automated and made easy and flexible via a script.
