  • 30 frame 29.97 change movie properties?

    Hi
I am working with many video animation files created with Carrara Pro.
This program has one odd issue. When generating a Quicktime Animation .mov the movie is 30frm NOT 29.97 This causes Vegas to slow down and adds ghosting on the images. My projects are mixed with HDV footage so the project is 29.97.(I figured a long time ago to drop the playback rate -.1 or is it speed? I don’t have Vegas open right now to check) and disable resample
It any event this fixes the problem. Vegas runs smooth, and the Images are sharp. Great…but
Now I would like to play some of these animations at HALF speed.
    So this begs two questions
    1) When I choose HALF speed ( 50%) in Vegas ( assuming the movie is at the correct frame rate) is Vegas smart enough to just play each frame twice?
2)Is there a better way to get these animations to play at 29.97 to begin with? I don’t care that they will be slightly quicker/shorter.
I was hoping to just click the clip properties and change it but that appears grayed out so I can’t change it.
    Thanks
    Brad

Turn off resampling. It defaults to on.

With resampling on, Vegas blends frames to create new ones if necessary to convert your source frame rate to the output frame rate. Normally if you go and exact multiple slower/faster, vegas will not create the blended frames.

With resample off Vegas will duplicate frames to fill the necessary space it needs to adjust frame rate, like 30 -> 29.97.

[Brad Leigh] “Now I would like to play some of these animations at HALF speed.”

The correct way to do this is go back to your Carrara Pro project and render the section you want to slow down at 60fps. It makes absolutely no sense to have Vegas Pro synthesize new frames from existing frames when you can generate the “real” frames you need in Carrara.

[Brad Leigh] “1) When I choose HALF speed ( 50%) in Vegas ( assuming the movie is at the correct frame rate) is Vegas smart enough to just play each frame twice?”

If you disable resample then yes, Vegas Pro will play each frame twice and your animation will look jerky. You really don’t want to do this. You want to generate 60fps in Carrara.

[Brad Leigh] “2)Is there a better way to get these animations to play at 29.97 to begin with? I don’t care that they will be slightly quicker/shorter.”

Since Carrara Pro is not able to generate the correct video frame rate to begin with, a better way would be render an image sequence out of Carrara Pro and tell Vegas Pro that it is 29.97 and it will import it as 29.97 footage. That is how a lot of animators work (i.e., render image sequences and let the NLE interpret it however you want)

    John
I can’t figure out how to get 60 Frm .mov to playback half speed pulled down. With my 30 frame I set playback rate to .999 I get 29.97.
Great this is crisp and smooth. But I can’t see a playback rate I can set that will play back 60 at 29.97. Closest value I can see is .499 which will equal 29.94.
I guess I’ll have to go to PNG Seq. I had posted month’s ago that Seq PNG at 1920 for long sequences was really pulling down Vegas. If I remember correctly you didn’t think this should be the case and ran your own test and realized that a big long PNG does really kill the frame rate on preview.( Don’t think it helps My animations are rendered 1920, and my video is 1440 HDV)
Unless there is something i’m missing on playback rate I’ll just re-render these animations at half speed. I do wish there was some way to just alter the data in the .mov file to reflect 29.97 with out re compressing the image.
I’m really trying to be uncompromising on the animation footage. I want these clips to be sharp on a Iphone, and so far I’ve been successful.
Thanks again for your wisdom, and help. I know you are also an audio guy. This project is about analog tape machines. I’ll send you a link to view it free when I’m done which I hope is soon.
    Thanks again

Yea, Image sequence is probable the best thing to use. It doesn’t have to be PNG. Try using a JPG sequence. This is actually what Motion-JPEG uses and that’s been a high quality industry standard for years. I would only use PNG if you needed an alpha channel. Otherwise JPG should be fine.

Sounds great (no pun intended) I’d love to see the final result.
