MP4 and MXF are just generic file containers. They can have any number of video and audio fomrats.
In Vegas pro you have native support for AVC, XAVC-S, and mpeg-2 in an mp4 file.
Vegas supports mpeg-2, AVC, XAVC, HDCAM SR and Panasonic P2 formats in MXF files. -

“can’t select or edit a portion of the file on the timeline”
This is a vague statement. What exactly do you mean by this.
I downloaded the video file. I can put it on the timeline. Vegas said it created an audio proxy file. I can play it. I can position the cursor within the event and the preview window displays as expected. I can trim the ends of the event on the timeline.
It does work in the trimmer window but the behavior is strange there. Only the audio waveform is shown in the window until you play, then the video is shown. When I stop, then the trimmer window goes back to the audio waveform display. This makes trimmer window usage with this clip unusable.

The Mainconcept template drop down for frame rate does not have predefined values for anything above 30p.
You can enter any value you want into that field so just enter a value of 50.

Also, ultimately you are going to end up with 8-bit final results for playback delivery.

February 23, 2014 at 12:14 am in reply to: C920 footage + HD 7870 rendering problems (Not a common complaint)Mainconcept AVC OpenCL does not support AMD graphics core next GPUs. This is 7xxx series and newer.
Vegas itself (the video engine) and Sony AVC do support newer AMD GPUs.
The Sony AVC encoder is about twice as fast as Mainconcept, single pass, when both are CPU only.

The Internet video sites, youtube, vimeo and smugmug, are always progressive AFAIK.
Give the Sony AVC and/or Mainconcept AVC “Internet” templates a test. These templates should be a good start. They default to 30p so if your interlaced footage is 60i they should be fine.
1080 video streams from these sites are around 7-8Mbps so many people may not be able to stream that but the sites always generate smaller formats for you automatically. 720 is around 3-4Mbps.
Does the FCP person want to edit your output footage? If so then you will want to give them a high bitrate file to preserve video quality. They should be able to read AVC MP4 files. Use Sony AVC or Mainconcept AVC.
If they have a bur in their butt and want Quicktime (MOV) files, then you need Quicktime installed. The free quicktime has limited options for encode formats and does not have AVC. I tend to stick to AVC. I am not sure which would be the best video option in the free Quicktime version.

My guess was they they did the same thing with CUDA… you pretty much confirmed that here.”
OpenCL in general is not broken…
CUDA in general is not broken…Mainconcept is the “broken” one.

You can easily set it for all events on a track.
Select the first event on track.
Right click and choose select events to end.
Right click and choose disable resample. You cannot use Ctrl+A (select all) because audio events and tracks do not have the same right click options menu.

You can download the benchmark project here.

February 20, 2014 at 5:47 pm in reply to: Tenative conclusion: Smart Resample causes ghosting when using 59.94 fps source footage and rendering to 29.97I guess smart resample is not so “smart”. Seems obvious that a “smart” resampler should have the smarts to know that it can just throw away every other frame when going from 2x to 1x frame rate. In this case 59.94 to 29.97.
