February 27, 2014 at 3:20 am in reply to: Mp4 and WMV – different colours after renderingYou have a levels problem. I don’t know about the specifics of WMV, I have never encoded to it, but for output with Sony AVC or Mainconcept AVC and most video players the video data needs to be in the studio range. Not full range. It sounds like WMV wants full range. Different encoders may want different input values.
If the video data is full range with AVC MP4 then the video player will expand the already full range data and your blacks will be crushed and highlights clipped.
If your video data is in studio range already. Then the vegas preview will need an adjustment to computer levels for accurate display and the encode to AVC MP4 will not want the adjustment to computer levels.
To verify what you camera outputs you need to use the video scopes. DSLRs and GoPros output full range. Other cameras I don;t know.

Some time ago in this forum or the Vegas forum at SCS someone asked about this and somebody posted a VEG file with a short example. I did not bookmark it and I cannot find a search term to locate it.
Really, it was just a lot of individual text events, on separate tracks, whose position is animated into position according, possibly with parent track motion, to the flow you desire.
A lot of manual work.

February 26, 2014 at 5:57 pm in reply to: Using AVCHD in vegas, or converting to MXF or other format?First, only convert or proxy if you must. Meaning you are not getting full playback frame rate or some other problem(s) getting in the way.
The Vegasaur productivity tool for Vegas has a transcoder feature which would let you batch transcode any number of source files to whatever you need.
MXF or MP4 files for the XDCAM mpeg-2 video data does not really matter. The video is the same. Since mp4 files are a bit more universally supported, then I would go that way just in case I needed to use or give the file to something or someone else. MXF audio is typically separate channels and some tools, like Handbrake, cannot deal with that. XDCAM in MP4 outputs a stereo channel versus two separate mono channels.

February 26, 2014 at 5:35 am in reply to: Using AVCHD in vegas, or converting to MXF or other format?AVC video can be very compute intensive to edit. A fast machine may not notice but others it can be an issue.
Cineform is an intermediate format. Very high bitrate. Cineform file will be maybe 5 times larger. Cineform is free via the GoPro Studio software. The GoPro studio software installs the Cineform codec into Video for Windows (AVI) and Quicktime (MOV). Both of these Vegas can use.
As for MXF. MXF is a generic file container like MP4 and MOV. Vegas natively supports mpeg-2 (XDCAM), HDCAM SR and XAVC in MXF files.
The XDCAM HQ 35Vbr mode is an easy format to edit (mpeg-2). You can get XDCAM encodes in MXF (HD EX)or MP4 (XDCAM EX) file formats from Vegas. This is probably your best bet.
You might use the Vegas smart proxy feature. Underneath this Vegas creates 720 XDCAM EX files. It might seem silly to proxy a 720 format with another 720 format but the Vegas proxies are mpeg-2 and much easier on the CPU for editing. Using the Smart proxy your original files will be used for the final render. Therefore you preserve max quality. The proxy is only used in Preview and Draft display modes.

February 25, 2014 at 7:24 pm in reply to: Sony Vegas doesnt remember my favorite render settingsTo expand on what Mike said, you name and save a template in the template settings dialog. The name is in the top edit field and buttons next to that for saving and deleting templates.

You did not mention what time stretch algorithm you used. Vegas has a couple. Classic and Elastique. You access this option via the event properties. Your project properties also has a setting for the quality level of time stretching.
Vegas does have a Metronome. You turn in on via the Options menu. For more info enter metronome into the index tab in the Vegas help.

Sounds like you need a black solid color media on a track under your video.
In Vegas, “nothing”, is always 0, as far as I know. When you have an aspect difference and therefore have black bars, then those bars are “nothing”. Nothing meaning that no video exists in that location. The effect filters like Broadcast color only work in actual video pixels from your source or generated media.
This can be solved by putting a solid media generator event on a track under all other video tracks. This event being the full length of the video. Use a legal black for the solid media color.

Apparently 144 is a minimum height setup in Mainconcept AVC. I tried Sony AVC and it goes lower but not to 90. 114 was its lower limit.
