  • Changing pixel format in project properties to 32-bit(video levels) gets rid of banding?

Posted by Rick Anvican on February 22, 2014 at 11:33 am

    Hi all,
I’ve previously posted about a banding issue with my source footage and resolved it myself, but just now I placed the same footage inside a “dummy” project with pixel format in its project properties set to 32-bit(video levels) instead of 8-bit which is default. For some reason, the banding disappears without any manual fixes or effects applied, that applies to all preview qualities (the banding is part of the source video).

Can someone please clarify? Thanks in advance.

At 8-bits, you have 256 colors, so when the compressor is compressing, the steps between shades of a color is larger. At 32-bits you have 4 Million colors, so the steps between shades of a color are smaller. The banding is still there, but in smaller steps.

Thanks for clarifying Stephen, I thought it meant 8 bits per primary color for the pixel, I’ve read that common projects should stay at the default 8-bit pixel format, in terms of reducing the banding, would you guys recommend me switching to 32-bit instead or stay on 8-bit and reduce the banding by another means?

If your camera source is 8-bit and the banding is already there, then 32-bit mode will not help you at all.

Also, ultimately you are going to end up with 8-bit final results for playback delivery.
