Just a guess but I suspect it is programmed directly via Core Image.

24p standard is useful for systems that are not 24pA aware and need the standard cadence in order to reverse telecine- like older NLEs. It also looks marginally smoother if left at 29.97 with it’s pulldown intact in a final edit. But when in doubt I highly recommend 24pA as it gives you the most options down the road.

DVCPROHD runs at around 13Mb/second. Firewire 800 is good, SATA or Raid is even better.

There’s a little more to it than that. 24p and 24pA can both be edited at 23.98 or 60i because that’s how they initially exist on the tape. 24pA can be automatically converted to 23.98 by FCP’s Automatic Advanced Pulldown removal whereas 24p standard must be reverse telecined manually via CinemaTools. So- yes if your desire is to edit at 23.98, 24pA makes it much easier than 24p standard but either can be cut at 24p or 60i.

You can set the end behavior of a clip to loop or hold on the final frame via the media tab. Other than that you can always pop out one frame and reimport it.

WMV is a completely different ball of wax- in general I’d suggest having a PC to do that work as the software available to do this on the Mac is not the best. You’ll want to get the Flip4mac software if you are Mac-only:
