24p normal? 24p advanced?
Posted by Andrew Paul bowser on November 18, 2005 at 8:18 amI am shooting a music video this weekend and I was wondering what were the benefits of shooting in 24p advanced? I shot on that setting once and brought it into final cut (without changing the correct settings) and it looked like it was shot on VHS!
This will be fixed if I change my FCP easy set-up correct?
Will 24p advanced have that “film look”?
What are the pros and cons between normal and advanced 24p settings?

November 18, 2005 at 11:45 pmHow exactly did it look like VHS? Sounds like you have your settings messed up. You should be using he DV-NTSC Easy Setup unless you’re planning a filmout.

November 22, 2005 at 3:54 pmThe way I understand it, 24p uses a 2:3 pulldown, 24pA utilizes a 2:3:3:2 pulldown. So it all depends on your timeline. If you edit in a 60i timeline, use 24p. If you edit in a 24p timeline, use 24pA.

November 23, 2005 at 4:31 pmThere’s a little more to it than that. 24p and 24pA can both be edited at 23.98 or 60i because that’s how they initially exist on the tape. 24pA can be automatically converted to 23.98 by FCP’s Automatic Advanced Pulldown removal whereas 24p standard must be reverse telecined manually via CinemaTools. So- yes if your desire is to edit at 23.98, 24pA makes it much easier than 24p standard but either can be cut at 24p or 60i.

November 24, 2005 at 6:53 pm24p standard is useful for systems that are not 24pA aware and need the standard cadence in order to reverse telecine- like older NLEs. It also looks marginally smoother if left at 29.97 with it’s pulldown intact in a final edit. But when in doubt I highly recommend 24pA as it gives you the most options down the road.

November 24, 2005 at 7:02 pmThank you noah,
I am a seaoned pd-150 user. TV, DOC, Commercial, blah blah blah
Yesterday my dvx 100b arrived. Saturday I leave for Africa for 1 month to film AIDS orphans inrefugee camps in Kenya and Uganda.I have no freakin clue what I am doing. The cameras really seem different. And I am feeling a bit anxious.
I have read the Barry Green book and watched the dvd.
I would love to know what you think would be the optimal settings for this camera.
We will be aiming for festival and theatrical future for this film.I was thinking I would shoot 24p Gamma indoor and 24p normal outdoor.
But why not just 24PA.. correct?
I will be editing on G5 MAC dual 22.5.. fcp 5
thanks for any suggestions..
