If there is a UV filter optionally attached in front of the lens- you unscrew that and get a new one- cost $10. If the original owner did not get a UV filter and the scratch is actually on the lens itself it could be quite expensive to repair though it may be worth going to a service center first to confirm that. There’s so many used DVX100s out there nowadays and in good condition- if you have the stomach to pursue a refund it might be simpler.

Providing the footage to the client on a portable hard drive is pretty much the best way to go if you want to work as a freelancer at this point. Giving them the “raw” P2 cards is not realistic financially. You could always run out a tape using a 1200A deck but that doesn’t make much sense either as they would then need to recapture that back to hard drive anyway in order to edit. It’s a new workflow sure but I think most clients see the huge benefits of great looking footage and material that’s ready to edit right away.

Targas can be weird- esp if they came from a PC. I’d suggest opening in Photoshop on the Mac and resaving as a PSD or BMP.

This gets asked a lot. I highly highly highly recommend shooting in color and removing in post. It’s super simple that way and gives you the options. If you do it in production you’re locked into that look. Suppose you later decide want more of a sepia or a very desaturated color look for example. I do recommend working with a monitor with the color set way day so that you create shots that look good in black and white but actually tuning the camera to this IMHO is a mistake. (You’d use the chroma setting if you wanted.)
