HVX200
Posted by Marten Benatar on April 5, 2006 at 11:07 pmIs there anyone who has some set-up specs for the HVX200? We just bought one and are wondering what general user settings people have set their cameras on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

April 6, 2006 at 2:33 amEverything! I’m considering buying this camera for a TV travel series. Is this the best camera?
An alternative to the P2 cards would be good to know? Firestore to a Laptop.
Weather proofing would be another along with other accesories.
Anbody broadcast this stuff on Discovery 100% of the episode?
Reccommendation for a tripod/20 foot crane.
Hows the stabalization? Has anybody shot 1080P and worked with it onfcp?
The whole editing process with FCP including hardware.
Thats what I was expecting from Creative Cow’s newsletter when I signed their questionare.
Cheers

In this price range I feel it is.
I guess your budget will determine that.
If you are getting a large budget for a show I would
go with VariCam. If this is a spec show then the HVX might
be the way to go.An alternative to the P2 cards would be good to know? Firestore to a Laptop.
If you had 2-8 gig cards that would get you 40 min of 720p 24pN footage.
The firestore is not released yet, but the claims are 100 gigs I think.
I don’t know if I would want to be on the road shooting 100 gigs at a time
with a tethered device. And I think it only works 29.97 streaming, no native mode.
Again, shooting on the go tethered to a laptop does not sound like a lotta fun.
But you would need an external drive/laptop to dump the P2 footage to.Weather proofing would be another along with other accesories.
Many things are being developed in this area.
Anbody broadcast this stuff on Discovery 100% of the episode?
Not yet, DCI approved short B-roll segments for a show.
Their attitude is they want all the “raw tapes” in this case there
are no tapes. But you could rent a Pana 1200 DVCPRO HD deck
and dump all the P2 stuff back to a tape later on.Reccommendation for a tripod/20 foot crane.
Someone else will have to help you with this.
Hows the stabalization?
You mean the OIS internal?? Or the way the
camera is handheld??Has anybody shot 1080P and worked with it onfcp?
Yes in 1080 30p, FCP Studio 5.1 is released with includes
support for 1080 24pA!! I have mine on order. The whole editing process with FCP including hardware.
Thats a whole nother website….

Phew!
Internal stabilizatio. How good is it?On digital Buzz news. Iris and Focus control for HVX200
https://digitalproductionbuzz.com/news.php?newsid=788&PHPSESSID=ac8766bf82d5f7cfc5eea842749f149eThe HVX200 Camera is portable and would be great for travel but considering the additional equipment to backup these P2 cards. Maybe the Varicam makes more sense.
Im using my trusty BetacamSp camera for now. Its heavy!
Thanks

April 6, 2006 at 7:07 pmHere’s something fromanother forum to answer the Discovery part:
EdThe document was written by Josh Derby who is Discovery’s Manager of Technical Standards and Operations.
The memo is as follows:
Panasonic P2 technology represents the next generation of acquisition formats, cameras that record files to re-usable media and enable truly tapeless production and post production. The day for that technology is certainly coming but there are questions as to whether its time has tryly arrived. P2 cards are expensive and are in no way disposable, nor are they intended to be stored as camera masters. As DCI requires producers to deliver original camera masters for all original and comissioned projects, the concept of fixed media poses a challenge. There may be a time in the future where DCI will be prepared to handle digital file-based delivery from its producers but until that time P2 will be governed by the following restrictions.
1. Material captured using P2 for commissions and original productions must be cloned to an approved tape format for final delivery to DCI. Tapes should be cloned in such a way as to ensure that they are properly referenced in the program’s final EDL or NLE project with proper timecode and tape name.
2. The program producer must demonstrate that workflow cost savings achieved by using the P2 format will cancel the expense of the transfer to tape.
3.Material for standard definition must be captured on P2 in the DVCPRO 50 codec. Material for high definition programs must be captured in the DVCPRO 100 codec.
4. The Panasonic HVX200 camera, which can record video in HD standards onto P2 media, has not been approved for unrestricted HD acquisition. While this camera records HD video onto the recording media the optical performance of the camera is closer to the performance of an HDV than to a oprofessional 2/3″ camera system. Consequently, HD media captured using this camera will be governed by the HDV guidelines. The HVX200 may be used in the DVCPRO format for unrestricted Standard Definition capture.

April 7, 2006 at 1:28 pmHi Peter,
I hope all is well with you and yours there in Toronto.
The article you refer to is in Creative Cow Magazine which is being printed as we speak. It will be mailing out late next week and will start hitting the streets then.
We have said on numerous occasions that the magazine was designed to roll out leading into NAB and that is it’s schedule. Late next week, we will also upload the PDFs of the magazine to coincide with the mailing and that way, our international readers can download their copies.
I apologise for the confusion.
Best,
Ron Lindeboom
