A little bit off topic, but I shoot in HDV and deliver in DVD (SD). The reason I do this is HDV captures at a rate of 25 mbps, and SD only captures at 8 mbps. With that extra data, you can do pan and crops of the digital video of around 15-20% without significant loss in quality.

Plus, if you add FX to DV footage such as color correction and contrast adjustments, my understanding is that they can actually degrade the image slightly. For that reason I always shoot in HDV or HD, and then deliver to DVD using the SVP DVDA render template.

Personally, I find DV footage on DVD looks muddier and murkier when compared to a DVD made from an HDV source. The HDV source looks crisper. If I need to deliver to blu-ray, there is very little I need to change.

Perhaps the reason why you don’t mind the DV look is because it is closer to the film look you are after.

I have experienced something similar to this when event FX windows open up to … nothing … and after a few attempts, eventually load. I used to get it mainly in the Sony Soft Contrast FX which I use a lot and sometimes in the Sony Saturation Adjust FX.

There was a suggestion a while back that a corrupt windows font could wreak havoc and cause window layouts not to appear correctly, but I don’t know which one.

If multiple functions are not working, it does not hurt to uninstall Vegas, reboot and reinstall Vegas by right mouse clicking the executable and choosing Run as Administrator.

Keep an eye out for messages indicating your firewall or antivirus software is blocking something unintentionally.

It can be done, and I have done it (PAL, PAL > NTSC) following advice on this forum, but darned if I can find who posted it 🙂

Personally I prefer Quadcam as I like the event level control, plus it is REALLY easy to tweak cuts. I discovered I had to mute all the lower video tracks after generating the master video track or they would bleed through during transitions, but otherwise it is a great plug-in which I use daily.

I highly recommend it.

I am not sure how defragging a drive will help, however Steve mentioned a possible CODEC issue. If you have installed ANY CODEC pack such as K-lite, Vegas will freak. Uninstalling and reinstalling Vegas may reset the CODEC associations in the registry. If you have K-lite or similar installed, I would remove it before reinstalling Vegas.

1) Any particular reason why you are using a 32 bit pixel format instead of 8 bit?
2) Have you selected Adjust source media to better match project or render settings in your project properties?

Al, I just found disabling it fixed two issues: constant crashes whilst scrubbing on the timeline, and badly skipping/stuttering audio during playback which also appeared in my DVDA PAL template renders. Not a good thing to give to clients :-).

One can surmise that the multi-thread processing code has issues.

How can you blame SVP when it runs OK on one laptop but not the other? You have kinda proven that the problem is not necessarily hardware related.

It sounds like whatever tweaks you applied to get Vegas running smoothly on the Lenovo have not been repeated on the HP. I would check your preview settings in the preview window. Given you have the two laptops, why not line them up side by side and do a comparison with your preview settings, preview RAM.

Are you editing the same footage on both?

Does the Lenovo have a 7200 rpm HDD and the HP only 5400 rpm?

Is the Lenovo running XP or Windows 7?
