Ultimate 4 for color matching?
Posted by Gilles Gagnon on June 7, 2012 at 11:50 amGood day everyone,
I came across a quote on a website from Nigel (Cow member) regarding color matching 2 clips from diff cameras.
Nigel stated he was successful using the color match plugin from fbmn software as well as Ultimate 4.
Does anyone know how Ultimate 4 can be used to assist in color matching?
Cheers,
GillesGilles

I would ask the original poster but perhaps they were using Ultimate S Pro’s ability to create a video wall to get multiple videos on the preview at the same time and color match across them? On the other hand, if they are color matching video from multiple cameras, the could just be using Ultimate S Pro Quad-CAM to do a multi-camera edit which also shows you a preview with multiple videos on it.

June 7, 2012 at 12:32 pmThanks John, I was hoping you’d pipe in 🙂
I can’t ask the poster from the source site as it was just a quote endorsing the Frederic’s product. However, Nigel is a cow member so am hoping he might see this post and respond.
Thanks for your input. I currently use the split screen feature of the preview windows to currently see 2 shots side by side. I then tweak manually using color corrector and curves. time consuming though.
Cheers,

June 7, 2012 at 12:36 pmJohn, just rereading your response.
Does Ultimate’s quad-cam allow you to see the effects I apply on a media (media fx) while in quad-cam mode?
When in multicam mode (2-up on the preview), the fx is not applied to the preview so i can’t compare / tweak. I must ctrl-shift-D to return to the single cam view and can then no longer compare side by side.

Yes, anything applied to the media will be seen in the Vegas preview when using Ultimate S Quad-CAM.

June 7, 2012 at 12:58 pmThanks John,
I’ll try quad-cam instead of svp11’s multicam on my next multicam shoot.Gilles

I successfully used fbmn’s software color matching plugin with Vasst Ultimate S Pro for a multicam edit with SVP 10c. I was able to colour match events on the timeline with much success. When I went to 10e, the plugin started misbehaving and giving me very strange psychedelic coloured output. Both John Rofrano (developer for Vasst) and Frederic Baumann (developer for Color Match) looked into it, but were unable to come to a successful solution. We concluded that Sony developers had changed their OFX implementation. Whilst Quadcam and Color Match worked great together up until 10c, they don’t after SVP 10c.
I have to admit I got a bit frustrated with not being able to find a solution quickly and didn’t give Frederic my source and project files. Given that the problem was complicated with another 3rd party plugin (Ultimate S), I left at that. I have remained in SVP10c to this day. I do have a CUDA video card which has turned out to be a dud because SVP11 is more stable with GPU acceleration disabled. What a joke.
fbmn software has since rewritten his code to be optimised for CUDA, but I have not purchased it nor trialled it. I suggest you trial and see if it works.

June 9, 2012 at 12:26 pmThanks for piping in Nigel. I was hoping you would.
Before I got your input, I tried fbnm’s color match on my svp11. The whole reason for potentially purchasing it was to save time. Alas, After watching the how-to video and trying it, I was not successful with it. I thought I was doing something wrong. Your post confirms a problem.
I opted not to report it back to Frederic as I had to get going with my project and didn’t have the luxury of spending much time with fbnm
s color match. If anyone has another formula/tip for efficient color matching, I’ all ears 🙂

June 9, 2012 at 4:38 pmI had no problems with the actual matching when I followed the instructions, but it just did not work for me above SVP 10c. I didn’t have the patience and time to work through it.
I don’t think fbmn anticipated it would be used with Ultimate S. It works at the event level in the multicam screens, but when creating the master track, things went haywire colorwise. John suggested I try to apply the color match FX at the track or media level (media bin?), but I never did.

June 14, 2012 at 1:25 pmHey Gilles, if you are ever ‘Down Under’ on the East Coast I can give you a few Ultimate S pointers, first hand, and I don’t mean the shark variety 🙂
