What exactly are you trying to do that requires you to strip the audio from the video?
Regardless, when you do this, it IS a long winded workflow. Some of my friends who shoot film and have to sync the sound up afterwards, it takes them days just to sync the clips and then drag the “new” sunk clips into new bins.
So you can either do this in FCP, syncing the old fashioned way, or you can do something in Quicktime Pro (which you should have on your system if you’ve got FCP, but if it’s Snow Leopard, you’ll need to install it from the OS install disc.)
In Quicktime, you can copy and paste tracks and save them. So you would open up your sound file, select all, copy. Open up the video quicktime that you want to put the new audio in, and I think it’s just paste. If you wanted to add footage in addition, I think it’s “add to selection”. It’s one of those, but I’m not on my edit system at the moment. So, no matter which way you dice it, it’s going to be time consuming.

It’s been a long, long time since I worked on FCP 4, but at least the Print to Video dialog hasn’t changed much.
However, I need some clarification-
What of footage are you working with and what are your sequence settings?
When you say you connected the camera to “the video, monitor and mac” how exactly are you connecting them? And did you read the manual on the camera to make sure your settings are correct to accept a signal from a computer?

November 20, 2009 at 8:47 pm in reply to: Which app do you use when recording your tutorials? The most recent FCP podcasts use iShowUHD. It can record to Pro-Res, which has been a total win for us. It’s also got some interesting options we occasionally play with, the green circle around mouse clicks being one, and it says it does record hotkeys, etc, but we generally don’t turn that option on.

We use these Skull Candy headphones, which have a noise cancelling switch on them (requires 2 double As). We’ve got some of the same conditions, especially alot of lawn maintenance aggravation. Great when editing in a noisy room for offline stuff. They collapse down really well for field stuff if needed. Also, fabulous on planes.
Overstock has them on sale now too, I might get another pair!

Also, in the Inspector window in Compressor on the first tab, it gives you a pretty good estimate of how big the end file will be. I use that as a reference when I’m compressing a long video to fit on a dvd. In the second tab (Encoder), hit the Quality tab and it will let you adjust your bit rate to get the file size down. Flip back and forth to the Summary tab until you hit a compromise that will work.

November 13, 2009 at 6:40 pm in reply to: Media Manager or straight copy? (Reposted from local UG – not answered)If they’re active projects, I would not use Media Manager. I would however, delete the render files from your capture scratch folders to avoid copying those over, and just re-render later.
And backup the FCP project itself to something other than those drives!

This little gizmo comes in handy for figuring out aspect ratios-

I would make a folder for your unwanted presets and toss it where you know can find it, then move the presets there. Toss your preferences, and open up FCP. I don’t see any reason why FCP would freak out. It makes alot of sense to do this in your scenario. If it does freak out, just toss the presets back.
