Problem with Aspect Ratio/Squeeze HDV to H.264 for web
I am working in FCS2. I have a 4 minute piece that originated in HDV 1080i60* and was edited in HDV, I had no problem converting it to MPEG2 for the DVD (through Compressor using the standard Best Quality DVD settings) but I can’t for the life of me get the aspect ratio to come out right when I try to export for the web. I am attempting to create two versions, one for Vimeo which can be full size H.264 HD and one for my own web site which needs to be pretty small (I’ve been trying to do 320×240 but that’s probably too big by a factor of two based on the last file size I got, still until I can get it right it really doesn’t matter). I built my site in Rapid Weaver and have been running straight QT films there but have just downloaded J W Player and am hoping to incorporate that for this vid.
For the smaller one I started out using the standard web download settings in Compressor (H.264 300 kbps), then I tried modifying them to manually insert the size and tried adjusting other things like frame controls (On, better quality, de-interlace, right?), none of that worked so I tried starting with the HDV settings and modifying them. My last attempt my settings were like this:
File Extension: mov
Estimated file size: unknown
Time remapping:
source frames play at 29.970 fps
Audio Encoder
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
Video Encoder
Format: QT
Width: 320
Height: 240
Pixel aspect ratio: 0.75
Crop: None
Padding: None
Frame rate: (100% of source)
Selected: 29.97
Frame Controls On:
Retiming: (Fast) Nearest Frame
Resize Filter: Linear Filter
Deinterlace Filter: Better (Motion Adaptive)
Adaptive Details: On
Antialias: 0
Detail Level: 0
Field Output: Same as Source
Codec Type: H.264
Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
Pixel depth: 24
Spatial quality: 75
Min. Spatial quality: 25
Key frame interval: 30
Temporal quality: 50
Min. temporal quality: 25After a very long processing session I ended up with a 65 MB QT file that says it’s 320×240 but plays in QT as a square screen with the image squeezed into the center. I have tried similar things for the Vimeo version with similar results. It shows as 1440x 1080 pixels (actual) in QT but plays squeezed into a square box.
I am sure I am doing something stupid, but I don’t know what it is. I have tried to RTF and follow suggestions, but if anyone can share with me what I’m doing wrong or precisely what settings I want for these two files coming out of an HDV sequence I would be most grateful.
*for full disclosure, the video starts with TIFF files I created in Photoshop and includes a couple of clips that originated as SD video but I don’t think this should matter as the sequence was always an HDV sequence.
