In addition to what Jerry said, you don’t have to install all the sound library files, the dvd template files (usually people only need PAL or NTSC, but it defaults to install both..), motion library files. If you customize the install, you’ll find you don’t need anywhere near 45GB of disc space.
Generally speaking, if you do an “upgrade” install on your current system, you’re asking for a world of hurt, especially since you have a deadline, hah. Finagle’s law- what can go wrong, will go wrong, at the worst possible moment.

Hit the W key- you’re on wireframe in the canvas.

Based on the TFM, I think what’s different is that exporting directly to Compressor, the rendering process is handled differently. So it sounds like because it’s going frame by frame, it’s generating it’s own render files, hence the buggy one is no longer a problem.

“The advantage of exporting a sequence to Compressor directly from Final Cut Pro is that rendering happens as part of the transcoding process, potentially saving you time and eliminating unwanted artifacts.”

The manual later mentions this- “The Export Using QuickTime Conversion command always recompresses your media when it exports, even if your export settings match the settings of your selected clip or sequence.” So I wonder if you went that route, would you be able to get a file without that error? Hmm.

I’ve seen this before and there’s usually one piece of media/render file in the timeline that went corrupt. In the past, I’ve been able to solve this by 1- trashing the render files, 2- trashing the preferences, 3-closing and reopening final cut, and 4- if all else fails, copy all the media into a new sequence. Sounds kind of dumb, right? But it can work!
Occasionally, there’s a media file that’s just gone bad. And you have to try and figure out where it lies by exporting chunks of the film at a time. When you get to the part that throws the error, you can then have fun tinkering with each little file. One of the things I miss about Media 100 is that the file icon would change when it became corrupt, so it was real easy to figure this whole mess out. No so much with FCP, sigh.

September 10, 2010 at 9:54 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro / DVCam Deck needs

I’ve digitized with an 800 to pin cable before, but not on a brand spankin new Mac (haven’t had to digitize tape yet, hoorah). I’ve also digitized using a good old 6 pin to 4 pin coupled with a 400to800 adapter. Gotta be careful not to wiggle that at all.

I would trash the preferences, open up FCP again and do the easy setup for DV/DV-NTSC. If it’s still not seeing it, shut down the computer, shut down the deck. Grab a cup of coffee if so desired. Turn on the deck, turn on the computer, and then open FCP.

Sometimes it works, swear to god! Digital Rebellion has a great free preference trasher on their site.

I’d be interested in knowing what, if anything, you find is the resolution. A friend of mine is having the same issue, and I really only speak FCP, but even I can see from the screengrab she sent that something’s not right in Whoville. All I know is- it’s an old Avid (PC), exported uncompressed 4-2-2, brought it over to a mac with FCP to do a DVD with menus, etc, and the blacks looked horrible, and apparently there’s some weird ghosting thing going on with the text (generated in Avid). Attached part of the screenshot she sent me, yehaw.

  • I’ve had the same problem and the only solution I’ve come upon is NOT to multitask when doing this particular operation.
    It’s like the old joke-
Patient: Hey doc, it hurts when I do this.
    Doc: Then stop doing that!

That’s banding in the gradient I’m afraid. It happens with all gradients to a degree, some more noticeable than others. You can try blurring the background more or lessening the gradient, but maybe some other people have better ideas.

Damn, I wish I was in France vacation mode!
Digital Rebellion’s Preference Manager will take care of it pretty easily for you.

I would also recommend having a portable drive handy with disc images (.DMG files) of your FCP install discs. Installs FCP in like 40 minutes and you have a backup of your install discs!

But I’m going to guess that Zane is right, and you’ll need to uninstall/reinstall. Rebellion also has a tool that will do an uninstall for you.

Did you try trashing the preferences? That’s always my first step.
