    To Whomever Can Assist Me,

I just recently installed brand new Mac Pro towers in the
editing lab I run. Since the towers only have Firewire 800
ports I was sure to purchase 4 pin to Firewire 800 cables
in order to run out of my Sony DVCam decks into the computers
(for logging and capturing). My problem is, Final Cut Pro is
not detecting the deck. I have tried switching settings (even
though I know the correct settings should be Device Control
Setup: Firewire NTSC / and Video Playback should read
Apple Firewire NTSC (720X480). The Problem is, the Video
    Playback keeps reading the following:

    [Missing]Apple Firewire NTSC (720X480)

Which doesn’t make sense because the Firewire cable is connected.

The only thing I can think of is that since I recently installed AJA Kona 3 video cards, they are somehow interfering with the settings. But other then that I am stuck. Any help anyone can provide would be great.

    Best,
    Mike

First thought is to check the cable… they often are the cause of connection issues.

I have been reading up since I placed the post and from what I can gather it seems like the newer Mac’s don’t want to read certain cables (i.e. this CGI Gear 4pin to 800 cable I am using). Very weird stuff. Have you ever heard of that?

Not heard that before… Maybe try a different cable…

I’ve digitized with an 800 to pin cable before, but not on a brand spankin new Mac (haven’t had to digitize tape yet, hoorah). I’ve also digitized using a good old 6 pin to 4 pin coupled with a 400to800 adapter. Gotta be careful not to wiggle that at all.

I would trash the preferences, open up FCP again and do the easy setup for DV/DV-NTSC. If it’s still not seeing it, shut down the computer, shut down the deck. Grab a cup of coffee if so desired. Turn on the deck, turn on the computer, and then open FCP.

Sometimes it works, swear to god! Digital Rebellion has a great free preference trasher on their site.

I had the same problem using an 800 to 400 six pin cable with a Panasonic AJ-HD1400. I ended up going another route. I would be curious to find out as well. Please let us know the Model of the Sony Deck you’re using

I have an editing lab with 12 Mac Pro’s (2009) and I’ve been using JVC SR-DVM700 decks. I can tell you firsthand that cables can cause problems. I ordered some basic FireWire-800 cables, and I for the life of me couldn’t get ANY of the Mac Pros (FCP) and decks to communicate. I bought new cables, and like magic, they all worked. So, I would definately try a different brand of cable.

Yes it turns out (over here at least) that the firewire 800 to 4pins don’t read but if I use a firewire 400 (with an 800 adapter on the end) to 4pin, that works.
