1. Not true. You can jump around just by entering a number (say 5.15) and hitting “enter”. Also if a clip is selected and you enter plus or minus and a number the clip will move by that amount.
2. You can import TIFF files
3. Not sure about Motion templates. Don’t have any try at the moment
4. You can export DVDProHD without Compressor. You just have to download FCP X and then do a software update to install the “additional content”. Easy as pie…

I don’t recall the exact error message. My laptop was unstable the next day. Some menu bar menus were not showing up (I tried repairing permissions unsuccessfully). Like I said, maybe it was just coincidence but this computer has been rock solid for several years until this particular crash. Something like that concerns me precisely because of my experience (or lack thereof) with this kind of thing.

I think it’s a matter of having to use it with a real project to figure it out. You can “play around” all you want with new software but, at least for me, I have to be doing something with a definite goal in mind (i.e.: complete a project on deadline) and figure things out in a real world environment. Then I follow that up with some “play time” to see if I can figure out some of the issues I ran into and to build on the practical knowledge I’ve gained.

Sorry – I respectfully disagree with this assessment. Using a combination of zooming in to the audio waveform (you know you can show just the waveform correct?) and the skimmer with audio scrubbing enabled you can get more accurate than in previous versions of FCP. Give it a try.

That’s what I thought originally. But when you publish drop shadow and all of its parameters they show up in FCP the same as in Motion.

It’s easier than I thought
1. Open Motion and choose File>New Final Cut Effect on the left
2. Set the preset/frame rate/ duration in the upper right of the same window
3. In the Layers window choose “Effect Source”
4. Go to the Inspector and enable the drop shadow and open it to show all parameters
5. Hover over the right end of each parameter block and a downward facing arrow will appear.
6. Click on the down arrow and a menu will appear. Choose Publish for the Drop Shadow effect and for each of its parameters.
7. Now choose File>Save As and a window will open. Template Name will be the name of the effect and Category will be the name of the container in the effects browser it will show up in.No need for rigs or anything else. It’s dead simple! This will apply directly to keyed overlay graphics with an alpha channel. For it to effect a PIP you just need to make the PIP video a compound clip.

Actually you can use any number of events in a project. However when you create a project you have to define what the default event is. Carrying it further – if you make an event first and import all of your footage etc into it you have what used to be the “bins in the browser”. You then create a new project with that event as the default. If you think of projects as the sequences of old, of which there can be many assigned to the same event, then it makes sense. At least that’s what makes sense to me: Events = the old footage and other elements folders in the browser & Projects = the old sequences in the browser. Projects can be put in folders (for instance: by client). Hope I’m making sense here.
