    Hi all,

I have to put together a preliminary report for work about the changes to FCP, and the impact FCP X will have on our operations. I already know most of the “biggies” (currently no OMF, EDL, XML, old FCP 7 projects, etc.), but there are a few things that I’m less sure about and would like some confirmation on. If any of the folks out there who have already taken the plunge with FCP X can answer some of these questions, I would really appreciate it !

    1) Time code. Everything I’m reading indicates that you can no longer jump to a point in a clip or timeline by directly entering in time codes. Is this true? Can you only use the skimmer or timeline scrubber to go to locations?

    2) We often have to subtitle clips in segments we produce. Is there any sort of subtitling facility in the new FCP X? Currently, we use the Belle Nuit subtitler to generate TIF files of each subtitle page, which we drop onto the top track of our FCP 7 sequence. Would this still work in FCP X (create a new “track” and drop the TIF subtitles onto it)?

    3) For some of our productions, we created Motion templates for supers and other graphic builds. I assume that those Motion templates won’t work in FCP X? Could they still be imported into the new Motion, updated, and then sent to FCP X?

    4) From what I’m hearing, you can mix and match formats on the FCP X timeline, but the final MOV export has to be either a ProRes or H264 file. Is this true? Our house codec right now is DVCProHD, which we use for acquisition (P2 cards), editing in FCP 7, export and archiving/broadcasting. Will we not be able to export a DVCProHD MOV file?

Many thanks in advance for any and all answers!

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

    1) You can click on the tc in the center of the screen (is it called the ‘dashboard’ in the new parlance?), or hit Control-P, and then type either an absolute tc (such as “20000” for two minutes from the head), or a relative tc using + or – (such as “+10” for ten frames from where the skim bar currently resides).

    4) The direct export from FCPX can be ProRes, H264, MPEG IMX, DV, or DVCPRO50, but not DVCPRO100 (aka DVCPROHD). I would think you could use Compressor to take it the rest of the way, but I don’t know how this would impact the quality of your video?

    Hope this is useful!

    1. Not true. You can jump around just by entering a number (say 5.15) and hitting “enter”. Also if a clip is selected and you enter plus or minus and a number the clip will move by that amount.

    2. You can import TIFF files

    3. Not sure about Motion templates. Don’t have any try at the moment

    4. You can export DVDProHD without Compressor. You just have to download FCP X and then do a software update to install the “additional content”. Easy as pie…

You can use your old templates in Motion 5.

One other “biggie” that makes FCPX workflow impossible for me at the moment are the audio output options. (not just OMF etc)

You can only edit in stereo or Surround (the default)

I need to export an M&E with my video,( as direct out.)

Usually A12=Stereo Mix, A34= stereo M&E. (recorded to digi beta)
( one client exports to 8 track IMX tapes)

One client delivers in mono, A1=mix, A2=M&E, A3=fx only, A4= clean voice over,

Other than exporting separate projects (and joining somewhere, and exporting to tape in another application) has any one a work around?

Can the 5.1 surround tracks be used independently?

    3) You can open your Motion 4 template in Motion 5 – you then need to Save it to the correct folder for FCPX to see it. The path is User/Movies/Motion Templates, then select the appropriate folder within that structure so you can find it easily within FCPX.
