Make a new event first. Import footage. Then make a new project and make the default event for the project the one you just created. Choose it from the drop down when you create the new project. Think of projects as “sequences”. You can make multiple projects and put them in their own folder in the project menu (like multiple sequences in the old browser). The more I have used X the more I think (other than the glaringly obvious missing functions that have been discussed to death) it’s very much like the older versions but with some elegant enhancements. I got Ripple Training for $39 and it was well worth it for the sections on projects and events alone.

The generators section is pretty sparse. Maybe that’s because X was rushed out? I did export a couple of generators from Motion just to see how that worked.

You can export Motion generators as FCP generators

Sorry but I have been working with X for a few days now and it’s not as bad as it comes across or as bad as some of the “experts” would have you think. It’s obviously missing some important features for some editors. For me the lack of output through my Kona card is an issue but I believe that will be further addressed beyond the current beta drivers Aja put out recently. However, editing functionality is not really that much different from previous versions of FCP and where it is different it is (IMHO) better. What little tape I/O I do can easily be handled with AJA software or by booting up FCP 6 or 7. I still have a version of FCP 4.5 on one of my computers….
The truth is out there – just RTFM!!

You can add dissolves to an “overlay” (or other effects). Don’t have it in front of me but I think I made it a compound clip and then it would accept the effect. There are a lot of things that are there that people are saying can’t be done. It takes a little digging because it’s all new. So far (after a few hours) I like what I’m seeing. Kevin’s tutorials are very helpful.

Your first tutorial was very helpful and cleared up some of the ‘misinformation’ that is floating around. I would like to see what is new with the titler and how the new version of the ‘motion’ tab (transform, distort, keyframing etc.) works. Also, is there a way to share projects between edit systems like if I want to start something on my Mac Pro and then finish it on the road with my laptop. What is the workflow? Thank you.

The amount of hysteria that has developed around FCP -X is… hysterical!

Your problem is most likely because the project properties in Livetype are the default settings which are CCIR 601 720 X 486. You can change them to be formatted properly for a DV sequence. (DV NTSC 3:2, 720 X 480, lower field dominant) Then it will work fine. Your Livetype settings must match your FCP sequence settings. It’s not a problem with FCP.

Are you adding a drop shadow to the LT graphic under the motion tab in FCP? That will cause jittering. If that is the case, do the drop shadow in LT and not in FCP.
