720×480 is NORMALLY a 4/3 ratio,
but not if you use square pixels, which you would for the net

BUT 720×480 with square pixels is not 16/9 either
it’s a non standard format

i’m not sure if it’s “more and more”, (since there are less and less 4/3 only TVs)
but it is true that that is a common delivery requirement.

check with anyone you are delivering to

the inner, small marks in the FCP title safe display indicate 4/3.

sorry i was wrong in my last post re the frame sizes.

but as for the specifics of getting your final frame size, Compressor is best,
and does provide options for pillar-boxing (Padding) in the geometry pane of the inspector.

DVD? Blu-Ray Web Delivery?

i would suggest ripping as SD, sticking to the original frame size,
THEN do whatever processing is required to get it to your new frame size,
remembering FCP does no do a great job of this.

as MIchael says, you chose which side of the selected edit you ripple / roll using the U key.
you can select the edit manually, or with the V key

i often find it quicker to summon up the ripple tool (rr) and then select the side of the edit i want to trim.

as you timeline grows in complexity, you will be wanting to select clips over multiple tracks,
and sometimes you will want to be trimming different sides of different edits (asymmetrical trimming)
you need ripple tol for that.

i haven’t used compressor to de-interlace,
the main problem is that you cant see your results on an external monitor

in the past i have used the NATTRESS smart de-interlce plug in .
it is very god, best there is for use within FCP in my opinion.

i took the same short clip, and applied 3 different de-interlace plugins i had, and on a blind test Nattress came up best.

as Steve points out you can Media Manage from the Browser, OR the Timeline

you can MM each final sequence one by one,
or you can copy / paste each into a new project, the Media Manage the entire project.

if your 130 short pieces are part of a whole, this might be alright.
if they are not, this would just be a continuation of you being sloppy 🙂

if your pieces are self contained movies, then you should MM each one separately, as the truncated media will go into a specific folder for each project.

also , MM can have certain issues, like:
– not being able to trim media that does not have a Reel#,
– and being a bit flakey with speed ramps (a solution is to edit the same clip into a blank track above itself with NO speed effects applied)
you will find it easier to trouble shoot as you do each one

and it would be a good idea to check each one after its been media managed

the recommended Media Manager settings are
COPY media
DELETE UNUSED
DO Add Handles
