smoothcam query
OK… we’ve been searching smoothcam posts here and have learned much, but still have questions. we have applied the filter to different shots in the timeline. sometimes smoothcam renders them quickly, and sometimes they take forever. but until now we have not been exporting them first and importing them before adding the filter… we just tried that, and it seems to be much quicker. but what really baffled us is we put the filter on seven clips in a row, just under a minute of footage, and it smoothed it out immediately… no render at all! looks beautiful in small window, but when enlarged we can see jitters from time to time. optimally, we should apparently export just the portions of the clips we want to use (adding handles, of course), then import them and add the smoothcam filter, right? or maybe just get a better stabilizer plug-in, like lock and load? material was shot from a helicopter HDCAM, some with a stabilized lens and some not. it’s been captured at ProRes 422. most is 29.97, although some is 23.98. anybody have any thots?

Depending on your FC version, SmoothCam will analyze the whole master clip (which may takes ages) or just the portion that you had cut on your time-line.
What you can do is to put together the shots to be stabilized on a sequence, then run Media Manager (Copy) on that sequence and apply Smoothcam on the resulting sequence.
This way the filter will only analyze the selected shots.

we’re using FCP 6. so, ur saying that using the media manager copy procedure on the selects in their own timeline will suffice rather than exporting and importing before or after applying filter, right? both have been suggested by others. we’ll give it a try and see what happens. sure is an interesting filter tho. mahalo for ur assistance!

the Media Manager method is like a batch export and import.

Lock and Load from CoreMelt just uses the part of the clip that you need not the entire clip like FCP does.

Never used the Smoothcam filter in FCP.
It is derived from the SHAKE node, which I own and use continuously — the degree of control is orders of magnitude larger. There is also a stabilizing function in many other applications now — MochaPro, Resolve, the list goes on… all of which give you more strings on the puppet.
