  • Quick question about pillarboxing HD

Posted by Jonathan Young on March 30, 2013 at 5:24 pm

I have a bunch of DVD’s from a client they are all SD (not blu ray)
He wants them ripped and pillarboxed, he wants the player in the 16:9 format, what is the best way to do this? he wants the master video compressed to sizes 720X480 and 640X360. Also when I rip these dvd’s I have all types of options are far as formats to rip them in, should I use ProRes 1920X1080 or 1280X720? or just the regular original SD setting? I was thinking not ripping them in a HD setting because it’s no use the original videos are SD all I would be doing is creating a bigger video file but with no better quality.

    Thanks

Right answer, give yourself a check mark! Frankly, the pillar box is a stylistic choice that doesn’t really make that much sense.

    what’s the end product?
    DVD? Blu-Ray Web Delivery?

i would suggest ripping as SD, sticking to the original frame size,
THEN do whatever processing is required to get it to your new frame size,
remembering FCP does no do a great job of this.

“he wants the master video compressed to sizes 720X480 and 640X360”

so where does the pillar boxing come in? those frame sizes are both 4/3.
    no room for pillar-boxing

Sorry for not being specific, these will go on his website, and although they are SD 4:3 he wants them to be in a 16:9 shaped player that’s those dimensions (640X360, 720X480) I think what I will do is just put them in a 16X9 sequence and send them to compressor to get the two sizes he wants.

sorry i was wrong in my last post re the frame sizes.

but as for the specifics of getting your final frame size, Compressor is best,
and does provide options for pillar-boxing (Padding) in the geometry pane of the inspector.

    720×480 is NORMALLY a 4/3 ratio,
but not if you use square pixels, which you would for the net

BUT 720×480 with square pixels is not 16/9 either
    it’s a non standard format
