sounds like you’ve zoomed into your canvas window with either the zoom tool, or Apple +.
all that does is affect your display.
of everything, (as you;ve discovered)

Shift Z is the “Fit to Window” command.
this will fix your canvas
you can also find “Fit to window” in the % drop down menu at top of canvas.
but remember Shift Z!
it works on the timeline, too, and you will love it!

hey, Liam.
where will you be working in Aust?
i’m based in Sydney, and am interested in interviewing people about their workflow on low-budget (or high budget!) film, especially with FCP.
i’ve cut a couple of features on FCP here, one was “Three Dollars” which was a 35mm 24fps project,
so i’ve got a perspective on the process if you care to catch up.

but Cinema tools can easily do the things you need it to.

that will only create a reference file.
it wont be able to be backed up to DVD, which is the goal.

you could do it in quicktime,
but as well as going thru the steps you’ve outlined you would have to do a save as, and make it self contained.
i’m not sure you would keep the timecode, either, although it’s worth testing.

you;d have a hard time with frame accuracy,
but as long as there was enough overlap it wouldn’t matter.

dont know what you mean by merge..
you mean it;s gone from stereo to mono?

but to just avoid all this,
you can simply copy the audio from the nested sequence,
and paste it into your new sequence,
then get rid of the nested audio.

for some stupid reason nests see the number of audio tracks as double whatever they contain.
so FCP thinks you have 14 tracks, instead of 7.

another simple approach might be to up your real time audio track allocation to 16.
(user prefs)
that should cover the 14 tracks + 2 more for music.

with a copy/paste you may have to do this anyway if you still have the default 8 tracks of RT
(7 + 2 for music = 9)

actually, Media Manager wouldn’t be good for this.

best would, be to make the one clip into 2 in FCP,
(create subclips)
then BATCH EXPORT them.

the problem with Media Manager is that if the clips but up against each other, & have continuous code,
then MM will try to be as ecomnimical as possible with hte number of files it creates
and will not separate them.

they dont have to,
they just set their display for 4-up.
then they’ll only ever see the 2 angles they need, plus black.
and that’s what they;d see with a 2 angle operation.

may need a bit of re-arianging of angles as they go,
but not much.

however, if you DO want to work with only 2 angles, the only real way is to export at full res.

OR be prepared for some manual trace-back at the end of the cut.
not impossible. but time-consuming

i’ve had this, too.

the only way i’ve fully removed them is to match frame, and replace edit. (or overwrite if you’ve already done a remove attributes)

can you make one new text generator with the font, size & colour settings you like,
then copy / paste the text from the old to the new.

maybe you ‘d have to make a one line version and a 2 line version,
but it might be an easier approach.

obvious;y i dont know all the details of your project,
but here’s how i might approach it:

create the one liner and the 2 liner.

load the one liner in the viewer
solo the text track.
use the down arrow to jump from clip to clip,
use F12 (super impose) to cut the new generator over the top of the old.

load the 2 liner.

use track tool to select all the originals.
hold Shift + Option,
drag a COPY of all to an empty track ABOVVE the new one liners.
now select all the new one liners.
Shift Option drag them up to overwrite the copy you just made.
while still selected, hit delete.
now you’ve got a new track of JUST the 2 liners.

solo that track, down arrow and superimpose the new 2 liners.

tidy it all up to 2 tracks: one old, one new subtitle.

open an old,
tab,
copy
open a new tab,
paste.

etc

great idea from Ben.

an XML file contains ALL the information about whatever you were pointing at at the time.

a whole project would contain a UNIVERSE of information (ok, slight exaggeration, but you get the idea)

a whole sequence would still be “too much information!”

so a text only sequence makes great sense.

those rescue apps are great,
but it’s a bit annoying that custom settings dont seem to be saved anywhere but the prefs.
however…
if you create an EASY SETUP using your custom settings… then that gets saved as a file.

MacHD / Library / Application Support / Final Cut Pro System Support / Custom Settings.

the benefit of having the easy set up backed up over just your prefs is that they are more transportable.
moving your prefs to another system i have found to be problematic.
